Friendship goes beyond just knowing people or spending time together with them. Friendship is about finding someone who truly understands you, someone whose presence adds value to your life. No matter how independent we claim to be, there’s always a need for genuine companionship. Choosing the right friends is very important because any person we accomodation in our life has a way of affecting us.
I'm very selective when it comes to choosing friends. Not everyone I meet automatically becomes my friend.
One of the things I look out for when choosing a friend is someone that have the same mindset. I naturally connect with people who share similar goals, ambitions, and perspectives. When I meet someone who is driven and focused, I find it easier to relate with them. I believe that when two people have similar visions, it strengthens the bond of their friendship. We can encourage each other, share ideas, and grow together. If someone’s mindset is far from mine, it becomes difficult to move in the same direction. I can't be going front and have someone bringing me back. I cannot be working hard toward achieving something in life and then surround myself with someone who has no plans for the future or motivation whatsoever.
Another quality I look out for when choosing friends is optimism. I'm an optimistic person and I prefer to keep people around me who think positively, even when situations are tough. Life can be challenging at times, and when you have friends who only see the negative side of everything, it can easily weigh you down. A friend who believes that things will get better no matter what, gives you hope and encouragement. I believe friendship should be a source of strength, not one that drains your energy with complaints and negativity.
Trust is another quality I look in friendship. I choose friends I can confide in without fear of betrayal. Someone who keeps my secrets safe and stands by me even when others turn away. In today’s world, where loyalty is rare, finding someone who stays true is a treasure. I have learned that it is better to have one or two trusted friends than to have a crowd who are only around when things are going well.
I also value mutual support in friendship. A true friend is someone who can be there for you when you need help, not just when things are fine. Friendship, to me, is about being available for each other, celebrating the good times together and standing strong during difficult moments. I want friends who can call on me for help just as I can depend on them. It is in those moments of need that the true strength of friendship is tested.
And lastly, I consider respect and honesty very important in friendship. I avoid people who gossip alot or bring others down. A friend should respect your boundaries and tell you the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. I chose friends that can look me and be honest with me especially when I'm not doing the right thing.
I believe good friends are like family I choose for myself and one good friend is better than many fake and unreal friends.
