Last year, I told myself I was going to grab every opportunity by its neck and by the time the year ended, I had learned how to sew and do local bar decorations: two of the most paying skills in Ghana at the moment. In fact, after learning how to sew, I didn’t know it was a big deal until I heard the prices people were now charging for sewing normal dresses.
And for the local bar, I was shocked when I heard of the prices people get for doing it. For those who don’t know what a local bar is, it’s simply a set up of local drinks. More like you are selling locally made drinks at a function so you’ve set up a bar and decorated it for it look aesthetically pleasing to people.
When this year started I didn’t verbally make any resolution but I knew that one of the things I wanted to do was to learn new skills. And since I didn’t have any in mind, I decided to go by last year’s plan to grab every opportunity as tight as I can.
Just yesterday, I wrote about how a friend of mine has learned how to do makeup and was trying to create a business page. Fortunately, I am her content creator since it’s something I like to do already and I’ve been moving with her for work. And one thing I’ve come to realize is that as humans, our brain catches on fast when we get to see something consistently.
Just yesterday, I realize that I’ve come to know how to do basic makeup just by looking at her work on people’s face. Trust me when I tell you that I was surprised because for about 15 to 20 times, I’ve tried learning how to do makeup. I’m sure it’s even more than 20 times but yeah I’ve tried so many times. But this time, just by looking at her work, I’ve caught on a few things.
And now I’ve made a conscious decision to use this as an opportunity to learn how to do makeup well. Over here in Ghana, makeup artists make a lot of money. The other time, I was shocked when I heard the price of bridal makeup. It was more than some of the salaries some government workers even receive. As at now, I’ve already bought the products and have started practicing all that I’ve been learning.
I can’t wait to become perfect and start doing professional makeup. I know opportunities will always come but for this particular one, I don’t know when I’ll ever get it so I’ve decided to utilize it to the fullest. One thing I’ve realized is that most of the opportunities I get don’t come looking like opportunities. I turn them into that. Sometimes, the situation may not present itself as an opportunity so you’ll have to be the one to know how to leverage it into exactly what you want.

It's a huge advantage to have a skill that you learnt from someone or by yourself, because you don't have to rely solely on the government for your daily bread. And also as you said, some opportunities don't come as opportunities till you turn them into one. Great work in learning how to sew and also I hope you also get to learn the make-up and become a renowned professional
Good luck and thank you for sharing @abenad

Working as a makeup artist is a really good route! I often wish i had gone to beauty school and herbalism school instead of university. I am going to be in a wedding later this year and was so shocked at the prices of makeup & hair for the bride & birdesmaids. Now I am watching tutorials so I can do my own for the event.
Oh me too! I was shocked after hearing price for bridal makeup. That’s really smart. You’ll be so good at it by the time the wedding is due and I know you’ll do a great job. 🥰
