Oh Telecel, Come on!

There’s this particular thing that happens in Ghana with our telecommunication networks. Everything is always very rosy with them until they suddenly decide to either change their name or merge or sell or something nobody even understands.

All my years in Ghana, I’ve known Mtn to be the best network until at a point, Vodafone came to take tbat title from them. And one thing about Ghana is that nobody has just one SIM card. Almost everyone here has two or more SIM cards of different networks. The reason is obvious. The disappointment is just too much to bear. One minute you are enjoying smooth network, the next minute you see no signal.

Back to what I was saying before. So Vodafone was literally the best in the country for a while and then we don’t even know what happened but they became Telecel. You know in these things, the original reason is hidden for probably security reasons. They said they changed to Telecel for expansion to be able to serve a wide range of customers but if you ask me I’ll say it’s cap. Rumors said Vodafone went broke so somebody bought it and changed it but well, Ghanaians talk a lot so I’m not sure what exactly to believe.

Now, my concern is that, if you claim you bought the company to give customers the best then why is Telecel now even unstable than our economy? You could literally be using telecel for something important and then it just goes off. Not even airplane modes bring the network back. Sometimes I get really worried about these things because what if someone is in trouble and doesn’t have any SIM card of different network?

I mean they have the best data bundle packages and it’s mostly very affordable to all, so most people patronize their services. The same services which do not work. I remember when I was in school, I had to send an email to my project to supervisor and by that time, I was using just Vodafone, now telecel. It wasn’t a funny situation at all.

I had to climb certain bricks in my hostel and raise my phone very high just to look for network. Oh it didn’t even come. The following day, I quickly got myself Mtn because imagine having to explain to my parents that the reason why I wouldn’t be graduating is because of network issues.

I just remembered this time where I bought probably the most affordable data bundle I’ve ever bought from telecel and the next minute, there was not even a single bar on my phone. It just went to no service. Honestly what’s the difference between this and scamming? The annoying part is the network came exactly the day the data bundle was going to expire. I really hope they do better this year because it’s really draining how they could just disappoint you when you need them the most.
