Detty December

If I’m being honest, @hopestylist inspired me to make this post. I told her I’m planning my detty December and she asked what it meant. I was a little shocked that she asked me that question because I thought everyone knew what detty December meant.

Detty is a playful way of saying dirty and with December being the last month of the year, we just presume that most people would want to have so much fun. After all, they’ve worked so much during the year and with December being full of concerts and parties, you have the chance to experience unrestricted enjoyment, literally.

Detty December is probably even important than other national events because that’s the only time diaspora pay thousands of dollars to come to Ghana. I heard one particular lady saying she starts saving for detty December in Ghana when the year starts. Others even buy their flight tickets months before December and that should tell you how much detty December actually means to these people.

It might sound weird but trust me, in Ghana, December has nothing like day and nights. People party from morning till morning. That’s when you will question where people get their energy from. That’s when the person who has been telling you they were broke will end up at all the clubs in Accra-Ghana to buy drinks of about 20,000 Ghana cedis.

Before I even continue, let me just add the part where Kwashey boys will also be alert. So kwashey is a slang for pick pocket or theft at gun point or pocket knife or any harmful object. During detty December, there’s a lot of people outside from morning till evening so of course that also means more people to rob. This is the time where pepper spray and other self defense equipment go out of stock in the market because people buy in packs.

In Takoradi where I come from, we have a free concert called made in tadi where artists who were born and raised in tadi perform for the people. Over here, the society plays a huge role in bringing everyone up so we believe that once you grow up, you should find a way to give back to the people. Don’t worry, I’m actually on my way to the made in tadi concert and I’ll definitely bring you all a vlog.

I know I’ve said all these about December in Ghana but let me just add that, there are also people who have really clean December. I really don’t know why they do but I know it has nothing to do with being broke. If there’s one thing I know about Ghana, it’s a place you can have fun to the maximum with even absolutely nothing in your pocket.

Oh! Dirty December! It makes sense now but this will still be the first time I’m hearing about anything like this and I doubt we even have such here in Nigeria.

To see how much people prepare so much for detty December, I understand your shock better. 😂😂😂

Thanks for making out a post to explain this to me and many others. 😂🏃‍♀️‍➡️

I usually think that detty December is all about having all the necessary foodstuffs packed up.

People usually make slang like "detty December is assured" when they see people buying or getting food items in bulk. That's what I thought though
