Beneficial animals for the garden, European Roller

I have talked and will continue to do so in a section of the blog about animals that are harmful to the garden, but there are also many animals that are beneficial to the garden. These are the predators that help us control pests in the most efficient and clean way possible. Our job will be to attract them and respect them so that they can help us get the best harvests.

The European Roller is one of the most spectacular medium-sized birds to see, not only for its appearance but also for its behavior. It is a relentless and fabulous hunter. If you've ever watched birds, you'll know what I mean.

This insectivore is capable of hunting almost anything, including mice and snakes. But it's especially spectacular to see it hunting centipedes with a skill in avoiding poison worthy of a tightrope walker. It is, of course, a very positive bird for all gardeners and fills a niche that is sometimes difficult to fill: that of the largest pests.

In Europe, it is a migratory bird that we can enjoy from April to October, when it returns south to wonderful Africa. If you are lucky enough to have a pair nearby, don't hesitate to photograph and care for them.
