Grandma's House: A Lesson in Bravery

There was this young boy named paul. Paul was a very shy boy who found it difficult to mingle easily with people; he also had a vivid imagination. He loved to read story books most especially the ones that talked about ghosts even though he was scared of them.

Paul had Phasmophobia and obviously, could not stay in a room alone when it was dark, especially when there are unusual sounds.

Well, One Tuesday morning, Paul's parents had to go for a conference meeting, and they had no better option than to leave him with his grandmother, who lived in a remote part of the town because she was the only closest relative there. His grandmother's house was an old and creaky one,

and of course paul was not looking forward to staying thereπŸ˜…. He knew he would most likely be all alone especially if no one came visiting.
You could tell he was not really happy when he saw his parents leaving. He was left with his grandmother, who tried everything possible to make him comfortable. She served him a nicely prepared jollof rice that very day of his arrival, and when he was done eating she showed him around her house. However, Paul still couldn't shake off the fear of ghosts. He could not sleep well that night, and every sound seemed to be a ghost trying to get hold of him.

The next day, Paul tried to keep himself busy by reading some novels his grandmother had given him the day he arrived at her house...although he really wanted to watch movie that day but there was a power outage a few weeks earlier which affected so many houses in that area and his grandmother's house wasn't exempted. His grandmother had to go out to buy some groceries, and Paul was all alone again. As night approached, Paul began to feel scared again. He could hear the sounds of crickets and the wind blowing against the windows. Suddenly, he heard a loud bump that came from the direction of the kitchen. Paul 's heart skipped a beat, and he was too scared to move.

He thought of calling his grandmother, but he had trouble doing that because of the bad network in that area. He tried to calm himself down by thinking it was just the wind or maybe some rats, but his mind just kept thinking of ghosts.

He tried to force himself to sleep by closing his eyes tightly but the sound he heard seemed to grow even louder. He could hear footsteps approaching him. Paul 's legs began to shake seriously. Suddenly, he heard a creaking sound, and the door to his room slowly opened.

Paul was frozen with fear, and he could feel his heart pounding really hard. He could see a dark figure standing in front of him. Paul was about to scream when he heard a soft meowing sound lol. It was just his grandmother's cat πŸ˜…. The cat had come to check on him and in the process, it pushed the door open.

Paul let out a sigh of relief, and his grandmother's cat jumped on his bed. He playfully chased the cat off the bed. He was grateful it was not a ghost but still that fear of ghosts was still in him.

The next day, Paul 's grandmother noticed he did not sleep well the previous night and so she asked him why, while rubbing his back softly...he didn't hesitate to hold back his thoughts. He told her about the noises he had heard. His grandmother smiled and said, "Oh, that must have been Mickey '' Paul looked confused as to who that was, his grandmother noticed how confused he was and so she decided to explain further that Mickey was just a rat that lived in the attic. She told Paul that the house was old and had some creaks and noises that she was used to.

Paul was relieved to know that the sounds he heard were just from a rat. His grandmother's explanation helped him understand that some things were not as scary as they seemed.

Few Days later, Paul 's parents, after the conference meeting, paid him a surprise visit in his grandmother's house with the hope of taking him home with them. Paul was so happy to see them. He told them all about his stay at his grandmother's and how he had overcome his fear.
Paul's parents were surprised about their boy's newly found courage, and were pleased with it for sure.

Very creepy - Iit is good that it was just a cat and a rat. Being scared is no joke - especially fear of ghosts because the living and the dead do not go well together. πŸ˜†

It seems that all it took was to show Paul that there is no need to be afraid of the dark and that everything has a logical explanation. Too bad though, I was expecting a ghost or a closet monster. πŸ˜…

There are many things to be afraid of in childhood, especially in a creaky old house! Thanks for sharing your story in The Ink Well and for reading and commenting on the work of other community members.

Yeah I used to be afraid of the dark because of ghost too lol...I guess it was just because we imagined a whole lot of things, and believed some stories were true while growing up. Thanks πŸ™‚
