Out of Character - Creative Non-Fiction

He's your younger brother but he's going to be the man of the house when he's older, don't pet him so much... Dad would always say with a tune that I knew wasn't so serious.

I never had a day to hate the fact that I had a younger brother, I was the most happiest to have a little one to hold whenever I wanted to and I can still remember how cheerful he was whenever he's with his siblings.

Menit... my brother called my name for the first time, wasn't the right pronunciation but I can still remember how over the cloud I was to have my favourite brother call out my name. I actually wished he never grow older as he was one of the cutest human I had seen but he did grow older as every other kid did.

The changes that gradually came in as he got older made the whole responsibility towards him as my younger brother different for me. He became taller and troublesome but in one of the most unusual way to me.

Sis! I'm 18, I'm an adult and I know what to do... I knew my Dad words were playing out when he said that to me. Surprisingly, I felt hurt to witness him realising he isn't a baby anymore but I was happy too that he was counting out his responsibilities to carry out as an adult as he grew older.

One time we had to visit a distant relative and live there for sometime until dad was back from his work trip. In dad's words he said, Justin, take care of your sisters and that made my brother act more of an elder brother than a younger one. He'd check the meals we were served, he would suggest what we do to help the others in the house and he would be on the look out for us whenever we complained of something.

He was acting so out of character but my sister and I felt some kind of safety having him acting that way. Our aunt commended him when we were about leaving her place, dad got the details of our stay at our aunt's place and my brother felt happy to be praised by my dad for being a responsible brother even though he is the youngest.

Second dad, what do we have for breakfast today? I would always tease him with his acts and he'd smile with a response that would make me laugh and be reminded that I was also having the role of second mummy, he has always been a funny individual to the family.

Our neighbours would say a lot about him but never a negative thing as he knew his limit when acting out his adult roles, he kept acting out of character but in a way that taught me more as his eldest sister. He is a lot more older now and the difference seem to have come to stay, I love it but I still find myself wishing I had my cute little brother to baby up.

How about you stop growing too so he can have that cute little "older" sister tooπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Men are always the rock honestly... Every family deserves a dad whether the small one or the old one... They stick out their heads to see to the safety of the family.

He did well and he's still doing well... May God clear his paths to success too.. Amen

Haha so funny I didn't want to stop growing but wanted him to 🀣

You're right, I like that we have a small and old one in our family 😊 he's an amazing brother.

Hehehe

It seemed that sons had to bear a great responsibility even if it was the youngest brother. I like your story.

I had a cute little brother too so I totally understand.
He turned thirteen three days ago and I was like, how is he all grown up. He is even almost as tall as me and I consider myself a talk person πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.. But one thing I'm getting from here is that there is a bond of siblings. Not many people have that so I guess you really lucked out but he shouldn't grow up so fast because adulthood isn't as wonderful as I thought it would be.
What I would give to be a pampered child again πŸ˜‚

Haha we know these things very well... Adulthood is kit easy at all, but growth has to happen πŸ˜’
We keep wishing to be pampered again lol

Sometimes we see our little siblings and wish they never grow older because of how cute they look. Hehehe, let it be known that the cute ones always turn out to be headstrong when they grow older.

It's great that he actually started taking responsibilities from a young age. It's part of the process:)

Haha the cute ones don't remain cute πŸ˜…

Exactly sis

Your brother has grown up and he is taking all the responsibility of your family. After your father he is fulfilling the responsibilities which was done by your father in the past. I think the responsibility transfered from your father to your brother. I can understand it because I am very much familiar with that kind of situation. Whatever he is still your little brother in your eyes 🀣.

Haha you're right
He's still my younger brother no matter what πŸ˜…

Ahahhaah. They always grow. You don't have to wish less or should I say you were unusually insecure at the boy became a man.

You know, when boys grow up to become men, they become so bossy. Now that your fears have become real, you can't take the man out of him. Hehe.

Haha yeah I know that πŸ˜…
I'm glad he's finding his own way out of situations and becoming his own man

Hehehehehe story of my life, I can’t believe my little brother is all grown up now, change in height, voice, personality etc but he’ll always be my little kiddoπŸ₯°

Having a younger sibling is a unique experience because you feel you have to take care of him or her, even if he or she grows up. In our societies, the male sibling, even if he is the youngest, feels the obligation to take care of his sisters, to play the role of a second father. These are patriarchal cultures that are very difficult to contradict, even in this day and age. @merit.ahama, i like your texts because they are always so real and simple. Thank you for sharing them. Greetings

Awwnn this was an interesting read "Menit". I understand how you feel but like they say "Change is constant", so I guess we all have to deal with the changes that comes along.

Thank you for sharing.

Your little brother became your guardian, feel happy about this, although I understand that sometimes, brothers exaggerate, the role of being the man of the house, cheers!
