The painful surprise

Mike got into the car with a smile on his face. He had this deep sense of relief. He had been at work for weeks. His job was the type that required him to be on site for weeks and sometimes even months.

Mike had a wife and a daughter. He missed them so much. He hadn't talked with them much because of work. Now that he was done, he had a three week break. He hadn't been with his phone for a while. So when he opened it, he saw the heartfelt video message his wife, Sonia and his 5 year old daughter, Marie sent to him some days ago.

"Daddy. I miss you. I can't wait for you to come back. I want to show you my drawings" Marie said in the video.

"Hi Honey, looking forward to your return. Love you" Sonia said in the video also.

Mike got emotional after watching the video. His wife and daughter were his entire world. He was going to surprise them. They weren't expecting him for the next few days but he wanted to surprise them by going home earlier.

As Mike got into the car, he felt excitement in his stomach. He began his journey and he enjoyed the view of the road. He saw people going about their business. The trees danced to the wind.

Midway into the journey, he stopped by the gas station to refuel his car. Then he decided to get his wife flowers and a cake. He knew his wife loved cakes and flowers and she would be really happy by the time he gave them to her. Mike continued his journey and finally he got to his house.

As he stepped out of the car, he took deep breaths and had a wide smile on his face. He got to the door but it was locked. It was strange because he could see the lights on inside the house. He concluded that maybe his wife was inside. Marie was supposed to be at school by that time.

He remembered that he had his own key with him, so he took it out and opened the door quietly. He wanted to surprise his wife with the flowers and cake he had in his hands.

As he got in, he could hear sounds coming from the bedroom. He couldn’t make out what those sounds were so he made his way to the bedroom. On getting to the bedroom, what he saw broke his heart to smithereens. He saw his wife being intimate with another man.

Mike felt tight pain in his chest. It was as if the world was spinning. His legs became so weak that they could barely carry his weight. He dropped the flower and cake to the floor out of shock. The resulting noise startled Sonia and the man she was in bed with.

Sonia jumped up immediately when she saw him. She was surprised.

"Mike, I'm so sorry, please I can explain" Sonia said as she started to cry. The young man she was with just laid there in confusion.

Mike wanted to say something but he lacked the words.
He just went to the dining room to sit. It was as if his entire world had crashed. They had indeed crashed. Sonia came to meet him, half dressed.

She knelt down in tears, begging Mike to forgive her.

"Baby, I'm really sorry. It was a moment of weakness on my part. I don't know what came over me. I didn't mean to cheat on you" Sonia said as she begged.

Mike sat there in silence. He felt numb. The more he tried to process what happened, the more tears rolled down his cheeks.

"Tell me the truth, how long has this been going on" Mike asked as he finally found the strength to talk.

Sonia hesitated for a while before answering.

"4 months" Sonia replied.
Mike burst into tears.

"You were always away and I felt very lonely" Sonia said in an attempt to justify her action.

"I have been working so hard building a life for us, and you've been here doing this?" Mike said.

He just couldn't believe Sonia would do such a thing to him, but unfortunately, Sonia did.

Mike made his way to the door. He was leaving.

"This marriage is over. My lawyers will serve you the divorce papers soon. I'll be filing for custody for my daughter. I can't believe I trusted and loved you with everything in me" Mike said as he left and drove his car away.
