The alibi

Greg had just finished work at the office. Him and his colleague, Ashley were the only ones left in the office. It was 5pm. Greg packed his things and made his way out of the office.

"I'll be going now. It seems you're not ready to leave yet" Greg said to Ashley.

"Yeah, I'm not leaving yet. I still have some work to do. I'll be leaving later" Ashley replied.
"Alright then. See you tomorrow" Greg said.

Greg decided to branch at a bar to just have some drinks and relax. He had been overwhelmed with stress that day and he just felt he needed to unwind. He ordered some drinks and he was given a receipt. He casually put the receipt in the pocket of his coat.

When he was done with his drinks, he made his way home. When he got to his door and tried to open it, he heard police sirens. Suddenly, a police car stopped in front of his house and police officers came out. Their faces looked very serious.

"Are you Mr Greg?" one police officer asked.
"Yes I am" Greg replied.
"We need you to come with us to the station. You've been mentioned as a suspect in the murder of Ashley Williams" the police man said.

Greg was in shock. His coat fell from his hand. He couldn't believe what he just heard.

Greg quietly got into the police car and went with them to the police station.

When he got to the police station, Greg was led to the room where he would be questioned. Suddenly a strange looking man walked in. It was obvious the man was going to interrogate Greg.

"Did you murder Ashley" the man asked
"No, I left her at work. I had just finished at work, and she said she still had work to do. So I left her" Greg said.

"Well, Ashley was murdered tonight. All evidence and confessions point to you as the culprit." The man said.

"I didn't do it. I swear I didn't" Greg pleaded

"I find it hard to believe you. Where were you between 5:30 and 8pm tonight?" The man asked

"I was at the bar. I went to get some drinks" Greg replied.

"Do you have any proof? An alibi?" The man asked.

Greg thought for a while.

"I have a receipt. The receipt would prove that I bought some drinks at the bar within that time" Greg said.
"So where's the receipt?" The man asked

"I left it in my coat. I dropped my coat in front of my door when the police officers came to me" said Greg.

"Alright then. I'll send an officer to get it" the man replied.

Within a few minutes, the coat was recovered and given to Greg.

Greg immediately searched the pocket and found the receipt. He gave it to the man immediately. The man took it out of the room and came back a few minutes later.

"You're free to go Mr Greg. We have confirmed that you didn't commit the murder. Sorry about the inconveniences" he said.

"No problem. I do hope you catch the culprit. Ashley was such a good woman. I'm so heart broken that someone would do this to her".

Greg got home that night. He went to the kitchen. Then he opened the kitchen counter to bring out a knife covered in blood. Greg had in fact killed Ashley, and he tried to cover his tracks by hiding the murder weapon, and going to the bar to get an alibi.
The plan worked perfectly. He never liked Ashley, especially because of the fact that she took his job and he had to be relegated to a lesser role. Greg had a wicked heart and he did a good job of masking it.

As he held the knife in the kitchen, wanting to clean it, the police broke in.

"Freeze! You're under arrest for the murder of Miss Ashley Williams. Whatever you say or do would be used against you in the law court" said the police.

Greg was startled, and when he saw that he was surrounded, he surrendered. The police handcuffed him and he was taken to the station to be prosecuted. The murder weapon was secured to be used as evidence in his prosecution.

The police let him go earlier because they wanted stronger evidence that he committed the crime, so they released him just so that he would lead them to concrete evidence. Now he had been caught and he would definitely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
