Tiny Little Secret

“Don’t go to the attic?” My father warned me after we relocated from northern California. We got a house close to the mountain and a beautiful view to see the city if viewed from the attic.

Everything new, making new friends, starting up school made me a bit nervous. I always had these bad odds when it comes to the first time being in school.

“What could possibly go wrong?” I asked my father one night when he came to my room to announce to me about my new school.

Dad is a writer, he had always loved adventure and since mother died he said north California brought him memories of mum which is why we relocated to a different location.

It was a fresh start though I didn't want to start everything new, I had to support Dad in any way I could. It's been like one week here and it felt so lonely.

The next day I was going to start school and it have always been a disaster the first time in school.

“Nothing will go wrong honey” my father said calmly comforting and giving me the strength to overcome the fear within me.

I embraced myself and concluded I was just going to be myself.

The huge building tower over me when Dad dropped me In Front of the school I felt so nervous. Taking a deep breath and speaking to my inner mind everything was going to be alright. I followed other students who walked in the same direction.

“Please where is the class for grade 7” I asked a tall, fringed, wavy girl who stood in the hallway. She looked kind of friendly which is why I approached her but she looked at me from head to toe, sighed and walked away like I was like dirt on her shoes.

Not bad, I muttered and kept walking then the next person I asked showed me the direction but I was already too late. There was a teacher in class. I thought I could sneak in tiptoe and make sure I didn't make a sound but I got noticed.

“Miss Sofia” I stopped on my track when the teacher called, making the class turn over to look at me in a horrified manner.

“Yes…yes” I strengthen my spine with my hand crossed to my back and my face lowered to the floor.

“I was notified by the principal about your coming and it's quite apolloing I was coming to class late. I won't allow that next time” she warned.

I nodded in approval searching with my eyes for my seat and there it was. I sat down and the classes continued until the bell rang.

I allowed everyone to leave before I headed over to the hall. I took a sandwich and a bottle of cola before heading over to the table.

I haven't made any friends yet and it felt so awkward on which table I was going to sit and without much attention I headed to the table that had just two girls sitting on them. They didn't look friendly but I guess they weren't concerned about the new student but were just focused on their phone.

Before I could get to the table, I tripped on something and fell flat to the ground.

“Oh gosh, it can't get worse than this” I cursed . I always embraced myself the first day in school and just like every other day it was the same.

“Porr bunny, see how you embarrassed yourself In Front of everyone.” One of the students yelled but I was not concerned. I was trying to wipe the smack on my uniform with a napkin.

“Hey let me help you” someone offered. She led me to the bathroom and helped me clean up the mess.

“What's your name and why are you nice to me”

“My name is Bella, I'm not nice to you but I'm trying to make you feel comfortable on your first day. Don't mind Deborah, she's always full of herself and everyone takes her as the Queen of the school. Probably she doesn't like you ” she responded tapping my shoulder. And I felt like I had closure and that was how we became friends together with Nikki and Isabella. Our friendship became closer.

One of the girls suggested a sleepover and that was the beginning of my nemesis.

My father warned me never to go to the attic, the words never left my mouth but became a thought when Nikki tried to find out what lies beyond.

“Hey we shouldn't go there” I tried to warn Nikki who was searching with her eyes for any switch or something to bring down the ladder.

“Why not, we could see the city from the attic? Don't you think is going to be fun” she said, not even looking at me.

“There you are” she felt relieved when she finally found the switch and my mouth was left in awe when there was a sudden crack. I prayed inside me it wasn't going to wake Dad up. It was 1 am in the morning and we woke up because of Nikki's dog who ran off over seeing a rat leading us to a room which I never thought existed. Not really exist but I wasn't so concerned about checking out the various rooms in the house.

The roof opened, bringing down a wooden ladder.

We all climbed up leading us to the attic that had only two windows. There was a carved old box at the corner, a table and chair and a telescope that was covered in a white linen. Everything looked so dusty and filled with cobwebs.

We promised to meet the next day when Dad is out to clean up and promised to keep the secret between us and that became a personal space for us girls to hang out especially when Dad isn't home.
