Safety or Legalized Abduction? The Story of Ukraine’s Deported Children

Meet the new Reporter from our family - my daughter @shreyashi who joined in a global conference arranged by her school, giving opportunity to debate, pressing global issues while refining leadership, public speaking, and critical thinking skills in them. She picked this topic "Safety or Legalized Abduction? The Story of Ukraine’s Deported Children".

I was pretty impressed by her preparatory write up for this competition, which is as follows :

Taking away children from their own parents, their homes, their lives and illegally transferring them in the name of “protection” and “safety”, putting them up for adoption without consent or a cause, changing their names, stripping them of their culture isn’t humanitarian aid, it’s forced deportation and suppression veiled as care and protection.

What Russia calls “protection” is, in reality, authoritarian violence against the most vulnerable. Taking children from their families, erasing their names, culture, and national identity, and placing them into state-controlled adoptions without consent is not safety, it is forced assimilation. This “protection” of Ukrainian children is not care but a distortion of humanitarian principles. They are violations of international law and fundamental human rights.

What we are witnessing is not an unfortunate side effect of war. It is a deliberate strategy. Russia’s relocation of Ukrainian children from occupied territories into Russian custody, where they are renamed, placed with Russian families, indoctrinated into Russian culture, and cut off from their origins, is not humanitarian protection. It is demographic warfare.

When you take a child from their land, strip away their language, and tell them their history is wrong, you are not saving them, you are brainwashing them, taking away their cultural roots, their heritage, their cultures and traditions and their ancestry. You are manipulating them.

And let us not ignore those who enable it. According to the delegate of China, these actions are acts of “safety” and “stability.” But this is not diplomacy — it is connivance.

And how could any of this be even remotely relevant to humanitarian aid? Stripping children away from their families, psychologically manipulating and brainwashing them, demonizing their culture isn’t humane at all. If anything, it’s inhumane, anti-humanitarian, dehumanizing, oppressive and authoritarian. This is disregarding human dignity.

What’s even worse is the language used to justify it. "Care." "Safety." "Humanitarian aid”. These words are being stripped of their meaning and distorted to obscure violence.

This isn’t protection or safety or kindness for it is state control masquerading as compassion. It is genocide by slow bureaucratic means. What is happening to these children is not a tragedy. It is a crime. And if we humans, as a community, don’t stand unified against this dehumanization, then who will?

Authoritarianism has always thrived on silence. It feeds off vague words, unarticulated thoughts, poor incoherent ideas, and inchoate thoughts. We must change this. We must hold the power to change, to have strong opinions. Not just for the sake of Children of Ukraine who are being stripped of their dignity but for the sake of humanity, for the future, for humans, for preserving and upholding our rights and dignity, for empathy and for justice, for everything that we as humans share, for our shared humanity. We must change, for ourselves, and for others. And I firmly believe that we humans must change for one another, because we are others and they, us. If we change for them, they shall change for us.

At such a tender age, she has exposure to such brilliant opportunities and she not only does pretty well in academics, but also she is very good in some extra curricular activities like painting and building cartoon images. That's the reason, I am again motivating her to start creating content on this chain and other web2 platforms - hopefully we will see her first Introductory post soon. As parent it's our duty to give shape to the flame in our kids, by encouraging them to explore wide range of activities, which will allow them to figure out what genuinely excites them. Sometimes outcomes may not match their expectation, but we need to praise their effort.

Providing the fuel to shape their flame, first needs identifying their spark - we will see how it goes over next few years.

I was amazed with her choice of dressing and accessories for the event - all picked by herself. She loves the best but for that she has to give her best - only time will tell where they land but I will do my best to motivate her.
