Nothing without God (200 LEI, 1942)

What's up frens!

Got another coin today, this one from land of Dracula, Romania! If memory serves me right, this one is the second coin I show you from the country.

Let's check it out:

1000007421.jpg

This is the reverse side of the coin and other than the romanian coat of arms, things are pretty standard. Denomination (200 LEI) and "1942" which is the minting date. Oh and the word "ROMANIA", which is pretty self explanatory πŸ˜…

Now let's check the obverse:

1000007422.jpg

Here we have a portrait of Mihai I, king at the time of Romania and also the last ever king to reign the country. His reign lasted from 20 July 1927 to 8 June 1930 and again from 6 September 1940 until his forced abdication on 30 December 1947.

Interestingly, he first became king at age 5 but later a regency ruled in his name because he was too young.

Now, I don't know if he was a good king or not. But after a quick read it seems like he made moves both against the Nazis during WW II and later after the war against the commies, when Romania was occupied by the Soviet Union. Both really tough options to go for for a king of a small country, so my guess is that he was one of the goodies πŸ˜‚

Here's a link to Wikipedia if you'd like to learn more on him.

Now what I find interesting about this coin is the edge. Despite it's small size (just 6g heavy) they managed to fit some engraved text:

1000007423.jpg

It reads

NIHIL SINE DEO

For

Nothing without God

This is the official motto of the Romanian royal family, deeply tied to Romania’s monarchy and the belief that divine guidance was essential for the country's destiny.

When it comes to silver we have 6 g of 0.835 purity. Yeah, it's a small coin but at least we got a high purity!

And that friend concludes yet another coin!

See you soon with more shiny from all over the world!

A very short reign and an interesting engraved text.

Nice! A coin from my home country!

With the country under Soviet occupation, and ruled by commies after they falsified elections, King Mihai had a heavy crown to wear... In 1947, students protested against the communist government and showed support for the king. More than 1000 students were arrested in December 1947, and the king was forced to abdicate under the threat that the arrested students would otherwise be executed. He was allowed to flee the country.

Although he survived the rise and fall of communism, years after the Romanian Revolution, he was not allowed to visit the country. The new neo-communist president was afraid of the influence of the king. Nevertheless, he came incognito using a Swiss passport, and more than a million people came to welcome him. He visited the burial grounds of the family and left in peace. A true gentleman!

Ooo, how I would love to visit Bran Castle on a night tour to do a little ghost hunting with a video camera.

If I,m lucky I could get a full body apparition of any long departed including Vlad the Impaler.

In the concept of comics, when you talk about Dracula I remember a news story when the Pope dies, a journalist makes a mistake when mentioning the Popemobile and says the Pope's Batmobile, the memes appear almost instantly, man social networks DO NOT miss anything hahaha.

That is a cool coin! I don't think I have any Romania coins in the collection at all. Having one from the time of Vlad from Transylvania would be really awesome, but I bet they cost an arm and a leg.

Hit me up on discord, as I will be in the USA at the start of June and could mail you something. Not on the West Coast, but it will definitely be cheaper to mail you within the USA, then from Europe.

BTW, he is in theory half Greek, as Queen Helen of Greece and Denmark, his mother, was the daughter of King Constantine I of Greece.

Never knew ancient Romanians had a very strong belief on the living God. A good one. And the edge engraving, really makes it outstanding.

@trumpman History is gold! Your post about the 1942 Romanian 200 lei note is awesome. The β€œNothing Without God” motto and King Michael’s portrait are so cool. It’s fun learning about old money and its stories. Thanks for sharing this amazing piece of the past. It really makes history come alive!
