Pelican

In Ukraine I saw pelicans only in two locations, one of them is not natural and people call it a zoo but in the wild I watched pelicans on the northern coast of the Black Sea or more precisely on numerous freshwater estuaries that are adjacent to sea beaches.

Moreover, seagulls and cormorants reign on the beaches and pelicans splash and fish in the relatively fresh water beyond the strip of sand.

These birds do not spend the winter in Ukraine and with the arrival of autumn they fly away to North Africa, but in the spring they return back.

Personally I do not know of any natural enemies for pelicans in the territory of Ukraine except for foxes and some hawks and kites and as far as I know hunters do not consider pelicans as a hunting trophy but nevertheless these birds are protected by law.

To be extremely precise the Red Book of Ukraine speaks of the protection of Pink Pelicans due to their particular rarity, but looking at my photographs you can see pelicans with both pink and yellowish plumage but I think that these are already crossed hybrids and there is no need to talk about the purity of the line here and as far as I know a pink pelican should have a black spot on its wing, but here I do not see it.

As a joke one can assume that these pelicans envied the pink flamingos which periodically nest there on the estuaries, and turned pink from envy.

Although the option is that their grandfathers and grandmothers in some lineage were pink pelicans.
