Extreme handicrafts.

Extreme handicrafts.

After reading the title, you might think of handicrafts, like crocheting or beading, but suspended with one foot attached to a flying balloon while you, upside down, do what you love. But no, extreme can be quite different.

So, just recently, I learned that the flowers of a plant called cattail (you can see it along lakeshores) are used to make artificial fur for children's soft toys, which is very similar to plush. I thought this was quite extreme, as it doesn't look like something stable and might even be hyperallergenic for some.

But there's no accounting for taste, although the sight of all that fluff on the ground made me sneeze. LOL.

But, of course, this is less extreme than the candies made from the same cattail fluff in some Southeast Asian countries.

Personally, I prefer to consider cattail and its stems—which aren't really stems, but rather twisted limtya, like bananas—as raw material for various types of weaving.

It can also be used as mulch in garden beds and as a substrate for growing mushrooms.

Baskets, hats, mats—anything a creative artisan can imagine.

You know what I noticed? This interesting plant isn't celebrated by songwriters, lol, because many songs mention reeds... the reeds rustled, the trees bent, or the grey heron in the reeds...

People often tend to generalize the names of aquatic plants, among which cattails and reeds make up a significant portion, in addition to reeds. These are all different plants.

While the stem of a cattail resembles a banana stem in appearance and structure, the stems of bulrushes and rushes are more like bamboo.

Products made from reeds and rushes are perhaps also somewhat extreme, but we'll talk about that another time.

Material thoughts about beekeeping №1

When I visited dense forests, I did not see ideal conditions for bees there, but many beekeepers harvest beekeeping products in such places.
