A prolonged pause.
A prolonged pause is the common term for that moment in a conversation between two people when, suddenly, the moment arrives when either one's next word is somewhere on the edge of the foul line and could take the conversation in a completely different direction than expected, and both remain silent, pondering their deep thoughts in silence.
It's like an approaching storm, from which a chain-link fence protects you. For a while, the fence protects you, because, indeed, it's not raining yet, and you're without an umbrella.
It's also like riding on a crowded trolleybus: the inside is uncomfortable, but outside the glass, outside the vehicle, it's very damp and even less comfortable.
Whatever the outcome of a prolonged pause, it is better than complete silence, because with someone who has become an enemy for some reason, you can eventually improve your relationship, but with someone who remains incomprehensible, you no longer want to communicate.
