Let's discover the beauty of Morocco #1 - Bab Khmiss’ gate in Meknes

(edited)

Today, I had planned to go for a walk in the famous Lahboul’ historic garden, located in Meknes. My idea was simple: have a nice walk, enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, and above all take some pretty photos to share with you. But along the way, something unexpected happened! As I made my way quietly towards the garden, the magnificent historic gateway, ‘Bab Khemis’, caught my eye. This is one of the city's emblematic gates, built during the reign of Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century. This gate, with its ancient architecture and great history, really captivated me. I said to myself: Why not share this with the community? Sometimes the best moments are the ones you don't plan!

So I took the time to stop and admire ‘Bab Khemis’ from different angles, and of course to capture a few photos, both of the outside and the inside of this majestic gateway. I really hope you enjoy these photos.

Bab Khmiss, one of the most famous gates in Meknes, is much more than just an entrance to the medina. It reflects a bygone era, that of the reign of Moulay Ismaïl, the sultan who shaped the city in his own image in the 17th century. The gateway was once the main entrance to the Thursday market (hence its name, ‘Khmiss’ meaning Thursday in Arabic). Just imagine these huge doors opening to welcome traders and visitors from the four corners of Morocco, laden with exotic products, spices and colourful fabrics.

I also took a diversion to the artisans' stalls selling Berber carpets, traditional clothing and magnificent hand-painted pottery. Each of these objects seemed to have a soul, a story of its own, and I found myself chatting with some of the merchants who shared their skills with me with passion.

One of the most charming aspects of my visit was the way in which the inhabitants of the medina welcome visitors. Whether in the stalls, in the alleyways or simply sitting sipping mint tea in a local café, they are always ready to offer you a smile and share a moment of conviviality. This human warmth is certainly what impressed me the most.

If you're lucky enough to be passing through Meknes, I urge you to make a diversion to Bab Khmiss. Not only will you discover an architectural treasure, but you'll also find yourself immersed in an authentic world, far off the beaten track.

Today the sun was shining and, as luck would have it, I found a little garden not far from Bab Khemis. I sat down there and took a moment to relax. As I lay on my back, I looked up at the palm trees above me. The sight of the palm leaves against the blue sky has always fascinated me. There's something deeply soothing about this simple but magnificent sight.

As for the famous Lahboul’ garden, which is a historic site, I've decided to postpone my visit until very soon.

Thank you for reading and see you soon !
