The Coconut Tree: A Tree That Gives Us So Many Benefits for Our Family

Today, I want to share why I love the coconut tree. Here in our place, coconut trees are everywhere. When I look around our farm, most of what I see are coconut trees. I grew up with them, and now I realize that every part of the coconut tree has a use. That's why many people call it the Tree of Life.

One of our family's sources of income is copras. My husband and I harvest mature coconuts, split them open, and dry the meat under the sun. After a few days, we sell the dried coconut meat. The income is not always the same because the price changes, but we are still thankful because it helps us with our daily needs.

I also use the coconut leaves. Sometimes, I make a simple broom for our personal use. Instead of buying one, I just use the coconut leaves from our farm. It saves money, and I also enjoy making it.

Of course, I also love fresh coconuts. During hot days, drinking fresh buko juice is one of the best feelings after working on the farm. But aside from drinking it, I also make simple snacks from coconut.

One of my favorite snacks we make yesterday is Inday-Inday. It is made with glutinous rice and sweet bukayo inside. We roll it into small balls, and it becomes a delicious snack. We also make bukayo, which is made from grated coconut and brown sugar with mascuvado. It is sweet, simple, and my childhood favorite snacks to sell in our community.

Even after we make copra, nothing is wasted. The dried coconut shell becomes our fuel for cooking. We call it binalokan ng niyog. When it is completely dry, it burns very well. We also use the coconut husk and dried coconut branches as firewood. They help us save money because we don't always need to buy charcoal or gas.

This is one reason why I really appreciate the coconut tree. Every part has a purpose. It gives us food, snacks, fuel, materials for our home, and even income. I can honestly say that nothing goes to waste.

Living on a farm has taught me to appreciate simple things. Before, I didn't notice how valuable the coconut tree was because I saw it every day. But now, I understand why our elders took good care of these trees. They continue to provide blessings for our family.

Collecting firewood is tiring, and my hands get dirty, but it's all worth it. It helps our family save money.

If you have land where coconut trees can grow, I encourage you to plant one. It may take years before it bears fruit, but once it does, you will enjoy its benefits for many years. Your children and even your grandchildren will also benefit from it.
