Growing up, I never owned a bicycle. I think this could be attributed to the fact that many households apportioned certain gifts to specific genders. If you were a girl, you'd expect to get Barbie toys and castle blocks. And if you were a boy, you'd expect to get toy guns, superheroes, and eventually, a bicycle, depending on what your parents could afford.
While I may not have seen this as a big deal as a child, I knew deep down that I wanted a bicycle of my own. But the fact that my parents could not afford one at the time left me with little to no choice but to find joy in the things I had at the time.
I remember I'd wished to grow up faster just so I could join my older siblings in riding adult bicycles, one of which we had at home at the time. I often watched them and loved the thrill of riding on the wheels and just moving through road to bumpy streets.
Fortunately, my younger brother got gifted a bicycle, and I believe that while we had it, those were some of my happiest moments. That bicycle automatically became mine as well. We took turns, and every single ride, failing and getting it right, hitting obstacles and feeling drained, were the most fun we ever had during the holiday after.
These days, adulthood feels a little tougher, and I wonder if my life might feel much better if I owned something as cool as a bicycle. Actually, I do think things would be a lot better for me, especially if I could use the rides as an escape from the many thoughts in my head.
As usual, I'm not sure why I'm putting this out here but I've had to list a bicycle as one of the things I'd like to get on or before my 30th birthday. I already imagine the fun and whimsical feeling of riding in a safe environment, on paths with little to no bumps, and the thrill of enjoying the landscape view in motion.
I look forward to having not just a new hobby but something to call my first bicycle, and I hope this one comes to fruition in due time.
