“Reading is traveling through entire worlds without moving your feet, letting words whisper what silence would never say.” Reading is an activity that not only improves our vocabulary, broadens our perspectives, and brings knowledge, but is also a way to travel through other worlds and universes, learn new stories, and feed the imagination.

In today's world, full of screens, reading has become an increasingly rare habit. And to think that books were, in a way, the “cell phones” of the past, often used for entertainment, but also as the best sources of knowledge. As much as I hate to admit it, lately I've been paying more attention to my cell phone than to books, but it wasn't always that way.

I read a book for the first time when I was twenty. When I was younger, I was never properly encouraged to develop the habit of reading. I started with A Song of Ice and Fire after watching the Game of Thrones series, at the suggestion of a friend who knew of my interest. It was while reading this saga that I fell in love with fantasy and historical fiction. As the Game of Thrones books weren't all out yet, after I finished the last one I started looking for other stories of the genre.

It was a time when I was really addicted to reading. I always looked for long books; if they had at least 500 pages, I was satisfied. For a few years, I read an average of 15 books per year. This habit fit perfectly into my routine. I read on the bus, going to and from work, during lunch, or whenever I had free time. I read so many books that I probably went through almost every fantasy title released up to that point.

Titles such as The Name of the Wind, The Saxon Chronicles, The Lies of Locke Lamora, and, of course, A Song of Ice and Fire are among my favorites. The last book I started was The Heretic, the second volume of the Grail Quest trilogy. Actually, I didn't finish it, I stopped about halfway through, and I think that happened when I changed jobs. It may seem strange, but since my reading was linked to my commute, the fact that I started working from home ended up disrupting that habit quite a bit.

I want to start reading again. Maybe I'll start with the first book in the Grail trilogy, since I don't remember the story very well. I planned to resume reading during the holidays, but ironically, it seems that I have less time now than I did when I was working. I really like the author Bernard Cornwell and I intend to finish The Quest for the Grail and start the Sharpe series, both written by him. I just lack the time, or perhaps the discipline to rebuild the habit, even though I'm at home.

Reading is something I love and miss a lot. Unfortunately, obligations take up our time, and once you lose a habit, it's not easy to pick it back up. But I intend to start reading again soon, as soon as I get my life in order. This is a habit that has helped me a lot in my development, and abandoning it, even with good excuses, is not something I am proud of. Experiencing new adventures is always enjoyable, “it is crossing entire worlds without moving your feet, letting words whisper what silence would never say.”

A leitura é uma atividade que não apenas melhora nosso vocabulário, amplia perspectivas e traz conhecimento, mas também é uma forma de viajar por outros mundos e universos, conhecer novas histórias e alimentar a imaginação.

No mundo de hoje, cheio de telas, a leitura tem se tornado um hábito cada vez mais raro. E pensar que os livros eram, de certa forma, os “celulares” de antigamente, usados muitas vezes como entretenimento, mas também como as melhores fontes de conhecimento. Por mais que eu odeie admitir, ultimamente tenho dado mais atenção ao celular do que aos livros mas nem sempre foi assim.

Li um livro pela primeira vez aos vinte anos. Quando mais novo, nunca fui incentivado da forma certa a desenvolver o hábito da leitura. Comecei com As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo, depois de assistir à série Game of Thrones, por sugestão de um amigo que soube do meu interesse. Foi lendo essa saga que me apaixonei por fantasia e ficção histórica. Como os livros de Game of Thrones ainda não estavam todos lançados, depois que terminei o último comecei a buscar outras histórias do gênero.

Foi uma época em que eu realmente era viciado em ler. Procurava sempre livros longos, se tivessem no mínimo 500 páginas, eu já estava satisfeito. Durante alguns anos, li em média 15 livros por ano. Esse hábito se encaixava perfeitamente na minha rotina, lia no ônibus, indo e voltando do trabalho, na hora do almoço ou em qualquer momento livre. Li tantos livros que talvez tenha passado por quase todos os títulos de fantasia lançados até aquela época.

Títulos como O Nome do Vento, Crônicas Saxônicas, As Mentiras de Locke Lamora e, claro, As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo estão entre os meus favoritos. O último livro que comecei foi O Herege, o segundo volume da trilogia A Busca do Graal. Na verdade, não cheguei a terminá-lo, parei por volta da metade, e acredito que isso aconteceu quando troquei de emprego. Pode parecer estranho, mas como minha leitura estava ligada à minha rotina de transporte, o fato de ter passado a trabalhar em home office acabou atrapalhando bastante esse hábito.

Quero voltar a ler. Talvez recomece pelo primeiro livro da trilogia do Graal, já que não lembro bem da história. Planejava retomar a leitura nas férias, mas, ironicamente, parece que estou com menos tempo agora do que durante o período de trabalho. Gosto muito do autor Bernard Cornwell e pretendo terminar A Busca do Graal e começar a série Sharpe, ambas escritas por ele. Falta-me apenas tempo, ou talvez disciplina para reconstruir o hábito, mesmo estando em casa.

Ler é algo que amo e de que sinto muita falta. Infelizmente, as obrigações tomam nosso tempo e, quando se perde um hábito, não é fácil retomá-lo. Mas pretendo voltar a ler em breve, assim que colocar minha vida em ordem. Esse é um hábito que me ajudou muito no meu desenvolvimento e abandoná-lo, mesmo com boas desculpas, não é algo de que me orgulho.
