The Real Question Behind Inmate Healthcare Rights

(edited)

Honestly, when I hear the word “inmates,” I do picture people who have done serious harm, people responsible for killings, theft, and other painful crimes. So the idea that their healthcare might be funded by the same taxes paid by law-abiding citizens feels unfair at first glance to me.

But then I ask myself a different question after I read the prompt, what does justice really look like?

First of all, the frustration is understandable that a lot of people outside prison struggle to afford good healthcare. Some have work long hours to pay their bills but still cannot access quality treatment when they need it. So it feels wrong that someone who broke the law might receive care they themselves cannot easily get. Like a reward for bad behavior.

That is the bad side of the argument because it touches on fairness, responsibility, and how we value law-abiding citizens. It also raises concern about how government funds are used. If resources are limited, shouldn’t priority go to those who follow the rules?

But there is another side we cannot ignore. Inmates are still human beings under the care of the country's laws, no matter what they have done. That means the government has a duty to ensure they are treated with basic dignity. Healthcare is a basic human need. If someone is locked away and cannot seek care on their own, then denying them treatment becomes more than punishment but neglect.

A practical reason to consider is that prisons are not isolated forever so most inmates will eventually return to society. If their health is ignored while they are inside, they may come out with worse conditions both in physical or mental, that will affect everyone around them. In that sense, providing proper healthcare is not just about them but for the wider community.

A balanced system where inmates receive basic, necessary Healthcare, enough to keep them healthy and stable is the way forward. At the same time, efforts should be made to improve healthcare access for law-abiding citizens as well. The real problem may not be that inmates receive care, but that many citizens outside prison do not receive enough.

While that is in place, there should be clear limits and structure. Healthcare in prisons should focus on essential needs that is, treatment for illness, mental health support, and prevention of disease. It should not become better or more comfortable than what an average citizen can access. At the same time, governments must work harder to ensure that citizens outside prison are not left behind.

The best approach, in my opinion, is balance and accountability. Funds should be used wisely, with transparency. There should be systems to prevent abuse, both from inmates and from those managing the system. More importantly, prison healthcare should include strong mental health support and rehabilitation programs. If inmates leave prison healthier and more stable, society benefits.

In the end, this is not just about inmates versus citizens. It is about what kind of society we want to build. One that only punishes, or one that corrects and protects at the same time.
