To be honest, I wanted to just scroll and pass, and the reason is because I feel this topic is one that might in one way or the other divide people. And I have my reasons, just last week, I was discussing about a TV show with a friend and I held a different opinion about it, but she happens to be a die-hard fan, well, she got offended and we just had to switch topic. Earlier this week also, we were talking about a TV show on discord, even though we didn't argue about it, I can see how it is that people hold certain shows in very high regards that I really don't seems to understand.
Now, it's not as if I'm saying reality TV shows are bad, no. To me, it just depends on the content, it's impact and what message is actually being passed. I very well remember the likes of project fame and Nigerian idol. Those two amongst others were amazing TV shows, and if you are wa Nigerian, you will agree with me that such shows did help a lot of struggling talents. Some voices that were never heard became known and opportunities were open to them. And a lot of beneficiaries of such shows have now become very big names today.
I our children could be allowed to watch such shows, those shows will tell them how that talent, discipline and consistency can open great doors of opportunities for them. But the truth is such reality shows aren't many anymore, what we have today are unrealistic ones. Just like the topic says, the only thing such shows portray are wealth, expensive lifestyles, beauty and a lot of acted, scripted and not real relationship moments. And having a teenager watching those sorts of shows will only have them thinking that life is so soft, and in the long run, they get pressured and may dive into odd stuff when their expectations have been cut short or when they are faced with the real reality.
For the lovers of BBN, I'm sorry I will have to mention it, I personally do not enjoy it. Because I can't actually pinpoint what the aim of that show is exactly, or what positive it's having in the viewers. Well, maybe it's just me sha, I really do not connect with it in any way, and I doubt I can catch myself sitting down to watch it.
So, should reality shows be banned, for me it's a no. The world has now turned into an open market and a lot of things are now in the open, things that weren't in the time past. Even still, banning is never the solution, depending on the age of this children if ours, we should know what to allow them watch and what not to, not every show us to be consumed by them. So, we shouldn't make every show accessible to them.
These TV shows are powerful and they can at times be a two-edged sword. They can inspire, motivate, educate, teach and all, and they can also mislead and distract this young ones. In short, we should be very mindful of such reality TV shows that don't reflect good values.
