Literacy is learning about culture. This is one of the phrases a former teacher told my class, and I think the same. Learning to read and write opens doors to information. Learning to read gives you access to books, newspapers, archives, and even the ability to learn anything else in the world. The internet is the world's largest public archive; here you can find manuals on anything, from technology, chemistry, table manners, and style tips. And even more straightforward things like changing a light bulb socket. Of course, for most of this content, you can just watch a video. But what about assembling something you bought? Like a bookshelf? It would come with the manual, and you'd have to read it. Otherwise, you'd have to pay someone else for the service. This isn't to disregard professionals, of course. Sometimes people simply don't assemble it for fear of damaging a part or lacking the necessary skills. But knowing how to read the assembly manual is half the battle.
Perhaps reading and writing doesn't make people perfect, but it opens doors to becoming a better person. Let's say you just learned to read and write and are now reading children's stories to improve your reading. You accidentally picked up a chemistry book, started reading out of curiosity, and ended up becoming fascinated by everything you read. Now, two years after this discovery, you're doing pharmaceutical chemistry research on medicines, studying new vaccines and treatments for diseases. You've become an important person who helps make the world a better place to live. And with this, of course, you've improved yourself, acquired skills and knowledge that make you the person you are, and become a better person through reading and learning.
Reading and writing have benefited humanity and continue to do so today. Thousands of years ago, people wrote with symbols to pass on their culture and knowledge to the next generation. Hundreds later, writing was used to record great wars and major historical events. Women and men wrote poetry and sent letters, records, scientific knowledge, and great adventure stories to their lovers. All of this was only possible because humans invented writing.
Again, I don't think reading and writing are the key to becoming a better person, but rather the gateway to it. The key is devotion and willpower in what you believe in. For hundreds of years, strength determined who would be the next kings and queens in the world. Today, intelligence is the new measuring stick. Knowledge and ability are necessary to become someone important with the power to change the world around us. And having knowledge and ability comes primarily from good writing and reading. Reading reveals strategies in the smallest things, writing reveals the skill you acquired when you dedicated yourself to it.

E até coisas mais diretas como trocar o encaixe de uma lampada, claro para a maioria desses conteúdos você pode apenas assistir um vídeo, mas e se for para montar algo que você comprou? Como uma estante? Ela viria com o manual e você teria que o ler, se não precisaria pagar a outro pelo serviço, não menosprezando os profissionais é claro, as vezes as pessoas apenas não montam com medo de estragar alguma peça ou não habilidades para o mesmo, mas saber ler o manual de montagem já é meio caminho andado.
Talvez ler e escrever não torne as pessoas seres perfeitos, mas abre portas para ser alguém melhor, digamos que você acabou de aprender a ler e escrever e agora está lendo fabulas infantis para melhorar sua leitura, e sem querer pegou um livro de química começou a ler por curiosidade e acabou ficando fascinado com tudo que leu e agora após 2 anos dessa descoberta, você está fazendo uma pesquisa de química farmacêutica sobre remédios, você esta estudando novas vacinas e tratamentos para doenças, você se tornou uma pessoa importante que ajuda a torna o mundo um lugar melhor para se viver. E com isso claro você se alto aprimorou, adquiriu habilidades e conhecimentos que fazem de você a pessoa que é se tornou alguém melhor através da leitura e do aprendizado.
Ler e escrever beneficiou a humanidade e ainda beneficia até hoje,a milhares de anos as pessoas escreviam com símbolos para passar as sua cultura e conhecimento a próxima geração. Centenas depois a escrita foi usada para fazer registros de grandes guerras e grandes eventos históricos, mulheres e homens escreviam poesia e mandavam para seus amantes, cartas, registros, conhecimentos científicos e grandes historias de aventuras, tudo isso só foi possível por que o homem inventou a escrita.
Novamente não acho que ler e escrever sejam a chave para se tornar alguém melhor, mas que sejam a porta para isso, a chave é a devoção e força de vontade naquilo que acreditam. Força por centenas de anos foi oque determinou quem seriam os próximos reis e rainhas no mundo, hoje em dia inteligencia é o novo medidor, é necessário conhecimento e capacidade para chegar a ser alguém importante com poder de mudar o mundo a nossa volta, e ter conhecimento e capacidade vem principalmente de uma boa escrita e leitura, ler revela estrategias nas menores coisas, escrever revela a habilidade que você adquiriu quando você se dedicou naquilo.
