Slavery in today's world is well packaged to the point that it will be difficult for a normal man to discover that it is slavery. A times when I work around the street I get to see some young boys and girls on the street well dressed, I get to wonder what exactly are they doing. Till one day I got so closed them I realized that there is more that meet the eyes, the funny thing about this is that these children have been brainwashed and they are told that they will be rich like Robert somebody who is a wealthy man.
Now, those who gives them the supplement to huck on the street work around with good cars and make them believe that someday they too will grow. When I see them, I so much have petty on them and wonder where exactly the parents of these children are or what they told them before they left house. It's too bad. This is why I said that slavery have been repackaged and it will be difficult to know that one is enslaved.
The set of people who are directly or indirectly affected are not just those who I spoke about above but are just a fraction from the many who I have not come to see before. I read several stories of how it was years ago when it was allowed to sale off people into slavery for one reason or the other. This is what is popularly known as Osu in my Igbo tribe of which this can be anybody. There are some stereotype attached to them even till that though they have worked so hard to abolish it but it seems to be impossible. The modern day slavery ways more that what we can just say because modernization have taken over so it have been repackaged into diverse forms.
As I earlier mentioned about Osu practice in my tribe in the olden days, in our present world it has taken a different shape, I have heard of different parts of this country whereby young girls who are taken from the village to the city are camped as they where promised a good job but are not used as sex machines. One of the girls who escaped from this came was lamenting of what she went through in the hands of her so called madam or better still adoptor.
Another form of slavery is the labour market in my country. Imagine in this hash economy that one is paid less than 20k every month to take care of himself and the family and with this peanut they still look for every way possible to reduce it. This is one slavery that many people don't want to believe that they are in. I went for one program yesterday and the facilitator was lamenting of how badly his wife is been treated in her work place.
Those who are victims of this slavery have a lot to suffer, some of them find themselves taking up loans which they may end up not paying up, they leave below standard as their emotional wellbeing is highly at stake. Imagine the trauma these young girls who are taken from the comfort of their homes to another location with heaven on earth promise of a job and at the end of time they are used as slaves and sex dulls.Completely eradicating modern day slavery is nearly impossible but at the same time we don't need to fold our hands.
The first thing that needs to be done is to create serious awareness on what this is all about it will help in no little way too. Also, the government needs to look into what goes on in the private sector because this where this is fully in play, imagine these sectors makes lots of money using these people but refuse to pay them well at the end of the month. Also some states in my country don't pay workers as at when due and this is so bad, some of these states don't pay gratuity any longer.
