This is a sensitive topic, though one that needs to be discussed and addressed. I see it so because as you wish to take one side and make a point for it, the other is equally calling for attention and help. I believe that we've seen such scenarios, in the online space especially, of course. People lose out on some things, get cancelled and face other losses because of one post or statement in the past that they made. It reinforces the statement most of us are conversant with; the Internet never forgets.
The Internet truly never forgets, which is why we need to be careful about the things we post or support. Sometimes, it's emotions that push people to make such controversial statements, which they end up regretting later when their history is dug up. That's how serious this matter is. There are specialised detectives in the online world who are good at such. Free speech, they say is free, but what they don't say is that there are consequences to every free utterance we make; either good or bad. And it's the bad ones here.
We can't deny how despicable, disturbing and sometimes disgusting some of these things are, from people's past opinions by which they are held accountable and condemned. When we look at some, it's hard to say they should just be overlooked. Some carry weights that for some reason, don't seem excusable. They could have caused some havoc and problems. In some cases, they could have affected someone or a few silently, who probably wouldn't accept letting it slide. And for other reasons, they hold grounds.
However, should people be condemned and suffer some severe consequences for their past opinions or beliefs, especially when they were from a state of immaturity? We might need to be considerate of this. Looking at some of our posts while still developing, some were probably silly and funny, maybe not controversial. I think we can give people the benefit of the doubt, and hold them accountable for the things they say today against those of the past, especially when they show signs of repentance and growth.
When there are signs or evidence of change and a different direction of life altogether, the past should probably not be held against people. Though it's hard in some cases, the reason why that was mentioned above. When such opinions don't have major effects as is evident enough from records, they could be disregarded. In cases where they might have incited violence or some other strong, heavy effects, possibly leading to loss of lives or wreaking havoc, it's hard to overlook, if we're honest.
If possible, past opinions or beliefs shouldn't be held against people when they no longer align with those thoughts or values and considering the nature of the statements. It's also a call and a caution to be careful, knowing that the Internet never forgets. Also, not to let emotions; which are for a moment, make us suffer a future loss or for a lifetime.
That's true, internet saves a lot, that's why we need to be careful of what we say on the internet spoken or written, it can make or mar your life.
