The Cost of Giving Up Privacy for False Security

This is an interesting prompt from the Hive Learners

Privacy and security are two things we all need as humans. But when it gets to a point where we have to choose one over the other, which would we go for?

Many people have already made ChatGPT their best friend and companion. They share everything, especially things they feel ashamed to tell others. They open up, revealing their deepest secrets, because the AI won’t judge them, nor use it against them later.

In a way, this is true.

But then again… there is no 100% guarantee that we are not being watched. We can’t be completely sure that no one else has access to what we share with the bot.

So the real question is

Are we truly safe, or just comfortable enough to believe we are?

As much as it would be nice to have the government protecting me, knowing they could track my movements, fly in with jets if I ran into trouble, or rescue me if I were kidnapped, especially in a country with a high crime rate, that is certainly an advantage.

But I also need to weigh the disadvantages before making any decision.

The government has shown that having access to citizens’ lives can be used against us. They once banned crypto. If I give them access to my details, they could easily detect if I am involved in crypto, and instead of protecting me, they could prosecute me.

Recently, they announced a new tax law requiring citizens earning certain amounts to pay taxes. Some of us are still thinking of ways to evade it because the government isn’t using our money wisely; they lavish it on themselves, send their kids abroad to study, while leaving schools in the country in bad shape.

Giving them access to my privacy means there is no way to evade taxes, and I would be literally placing my life in their hands.

Moreover, the government in my country doesn’t prioritize its citizens.

There is no assurance they would even come to my aid if I were in danger. There have been a lot of killings, and the government could deploy soldiers or take strong action against criminals, yet they negotiate with them instead. Relying on them for protection? That is a No.

I would prefer my privacy and not have any government monitoring my every move. As for protection, I have been on this planet for more than three decades, and I am still alive. If I have managed to keep myself safe for this long, I can continue to do so without relying on the government, especially since they are already failing at doing their job when it comes to keeping citizens safe.

In my country, the government is the enemy we need to protect ourselves from. Letting them have access to our lives and activities is like handing our enemy a gun and giving them the perfect chance to use it against us.
