From Forced Labor to Human Trafficking: The Face of Slavery in the 21st Century

Hello Learners.

Slavery has been in existence since the time of our forefathers... I heard the history related to the Badagry beach; it was the place where our people were taken on a ship to other countries to work on farms. There was also a deep well there where they hid those slaves until the ship arrived.

Life was hard for those who were kidnapped; they were shackled and given food once a day, they ate to live and live to work.

Now we would think such things no longer exist, but they do, and it is what we know as human trafficking.

There are many ways that people can be enslaved now... One Uncle or Aunt not related to them will appear from nowhere and start telling them about how they can help them relocate abroad, they will help them with the processing and the money but they have to work for a certain years before they can be free and most time they tend to make times ten of the money they use to sponsor them to go and work as housegirl/boy abroad before they are finally free and in some cases, they will never be free because they might land in a brothel where they will be used as sex slaves.

Many ladies have fallen into this trap. I do not blame the victims; it is not bad to want a good life. I put all the blame on the exploiter who makes fake promises to them to lure them into being an instrument of entertainment for men in other countries.

There is also a route through the desert that my country people pass to Libya, and I have heard tales about how the ladies are being used on the way. There are some checkpoints that they will reach where all the ladies in the vehicles must have sex with the men there to grant them a passage, and when they get to the country, too, some are used as sex slaves, while some are used as housemaids.

So Slavery never ends, and the way I think we can slowly eradicate it is if people learn to stay in their country and stop looking for a better life in other countries, which made them fall for the deception that put them in a worse condition...

If you want to seek greener pastures in another country, make sure you go through the right way. Taking flight seems to be the best way, and also have your documents to avoid playing hide and seek with the police over there to the extent you will voluntarily enslave yourself to those who plan to help you secure your documents.

There should be capital punishment for the human traffickers; this would make many people think before engaging in it. Anyone caught in the act of a fake pretense to take innocent girls to other countries to use for sex slaves should be given the death penalty... No mercy for those people.

Slavery is still very much practiced among us, sadly.

it is and not sure it can ever be stopped but the rate can be reduced.

Slavery has only changed its form and continues to happen in cruel ways. I totally agree: the guilty one is never the victim, but the exploiter.

You are so right, each time I hear news or see pictures of people who take this dangerous route just to be abroad I feel their forefathers are ashame of them.

Definitely! The grass isn't always greener on the other side and there's really no easy way to quick riches. Modern slavery is very much sinister in nature compared to slavery of pre-modern times.
