The fractal quality of its spines | PhotoFeed Contest Black & White Photography Round 180 [EN-ES]

Hello black and white photography lovers on Hive's PhotoFeed!

Cacti have the power to capture the attention of people—and living beings in general. Proof of this lies in those species that, through their strategic allure, draw in their victims only to devour them like the most ruthless carnivore in the animal kingdom.

Fortunately, there are no such species in Cuba. Nevertheless, these plants never cease to captivate me with the striking contrast between their sublime appearance and the danger their spines pose to anyone who approaches—something that strikes me, perhaps, as a symbolic representation of other realities.

Speaking of thorns, a few days ago, during a friendly get-together with @ernestopg and @lizandra, I paused to examine some cacti at @lizandra’s home in detail; I was utterly captivated by their diverse forms—evoking geometric interplay amidst apparent chaos—in which one could discern the most ingenious works of art.

Considering the fractal nature of the arrangement might offer one perspective on how the protruding, intertwined spines are distributed across the fleshy bodies of these cactus species.

Different, yet neighbors in the courtyard, both seek the sunlight and seem to caress the wind with their thorns.

All that remains is to be careful while allowing them to grow with complete freedom.

And so, between one thorn and the next, I bid you farewell for now until our next encounter with black-and-white photography—but not without first sending each of you a hug of light!

Los cactus tienen el poder de llamar la atención a más de una persona o ser vivo en general. Muestra de ello está en aquellas especies que, por su encanto estratégico, atraen a sus víctimas hasta devorarlas como el más despiadado carnívoro del reino animal.

En Cuba, por fortuna, no hay especies de este tipo. Sin embargo, no dejan de cautivarme estas plantas por su contrastada belleza entre lo sublime de sus apariencias y el peligro que puede representar las espinas para quien se acerque a ellas, algo que se me antoja representación simbólica de otras realidades tal vez.

Hablando de espinas, durante un tarde de fiesta amistosa con @ernestopg y @lizandra, hace unos días me detuve a contemplar en detalle unos cactus que hay en casa de la propia @lizandra y me cautivó en extremo las formas diversas que evocan juegos geométricos en un aparente caos ante el cual se pueden dilucidar las más ingeniosas obras de arte.

Pensar en lo fractal, pudiera ser una de las variantes en la disposición de cada aguja sobresaliente y entrelazada sobre la carnosidad de cada especie de estos cactus.

Diferentes, pero vecinos en el patio, ambos buscan la luz solar y parecen acariciar al viento con sus espinas.

Solo queda ser cuidadosos y a la vez, permitirles crecer con toda su libertad.

Y entre una espina y otra, me voy despidiendo por ahora hasta un próximo encuentro con la fotografía en blanco y negro, no sin antes ofrecerles a cada uno de ustedes ¡un abrazo de luz!
