Never give up, fly! | PhotoFeed Contest Black & White Photography Round 149 [EN-ES]

I think I've mentioned before that I love to fly. I haven't yet been able to skydive, but I have at least had the experience of paragliding.

From the very process of inflating the wings, the excitement brings an indescribable sparkle to my eyes, one that I long to experience many more times.

A few weeks ago, I enjoyed a show where one of the members of my city's model aircraft club was demonstrating his paragliding skills. I wanted to keep some of the black and white photos I took specifically for this @photofeed initiative.

The most curious thing about what was happening at that moment is that, I think, many of those present had no idea that paragliding practically began in this province in the early 1990s as a result of what was called the Special Period.

These were years when the country's economy and other resources were beginning to decline, and parachuting was no longer possible for members of air sports clubs. As an alternative, the first steps in the world of paragliding were taken, thanks to donations from Spain and later other European countries. It's important to understand that for a resident of Cuba, paragliding is financially unaffordable.

As you can see in the photos, the gliders weren't properly inflated. This is understandable in an urban environment, since it's well known that the ideal place to fly is at higher elevations where there's a break in the air currents, creating differences in airflow that allow the gliders to stay afloat in these variations from warm air to its various gradations.

The spectacle is quite interesting, as it's not something you often see in the city, and for many, it's a novel experience. I hope you've also enjoyed each photo. Who knows, maybe one day you'll come across a harness flying over some beautiful valley.

Me parece he dicho antes acá que me encanta volar. Aún no he podido lanzarme en un paracaídas, pero al menos sí logre tener la experiencia del parapente.

Desde el mismo proceso de inflar sus velas la excitación provoca un brillo en los ojos indescriptible que anhelo se repita muchas más.

Hace unas semanas, pude disfrutar de un espectáculo donde uno de los integrantes del club de aeromodelismo de mi ciudad intentaba mostrar al pueblo su destreza con un parapente. Quise quedarme con algunas de las fotos que tomé en blanco y negro justamente pensando en esta iniciativa de @photofeed.

Lo más curioso de lo ocurría en este momento, es que, pienso yo, muchos de los que estaban presentes no tenían idea de que justo en esta provincia prácticamente se iniciaron los vuelos en parapente a comienzos de la década de 1990 como efecto de lo que se llamó Período Especial.

Eran años donde iniciaba el deterioro económico y de otros recursos en el país y los vuelos en paracaídas ya no eran posible para los que formaban parte de los clubes de deportes aéreos. Entonces, como alternativa, se comenzó a dar los primeros pasos en el mundo del parapente, gracias a donaciones que llegaron de España y luego de otros países de Europa. Hay que comprender que, para un residente en Cuba, es imposible acceder económicamente a ningún parapente por lo caro que resultan.

Como se aprecia en las fotos, no se logró inflar adecuadamente las velas. Algo lógico para un entorno citadino pues es conocido que el sitio ideal para volar es justo en elevaciones donde exista una ruptura que propicie diferencias de corrientes de aire y las velas se puedan sostener en esos diferenciales que transitan desde el aire caliente hasta sus diversas gradaciones.

Igual es interesante el espectáculo pues no es común verlo en la urbe y para muchos es algo novedoso. Espero ustedes también hayan disfrutado a través de cada foto. Quién sabe si algún día se encuentran con un arnés volando sobre algún valle hermoso.
