Not in exactly the same words, but yesterday I heard a phrase that said we need to find pleasure and satisfaction while building something and that we should not place all our happiness solely on the final result. How important is that? Very.
I started thinking about how many times, throughout my journey so far, the only things that truly mattered were the results. I was always looking at where I wanted to go, but I hardly ever paid attention to the path I was taking. And when the results did not come, frustration would emerge like a wound that needed to be treated carefully, because some wounds do not heal so easily.
Results and nothing but results. Was I unable to see that what was being built along the way also had value? That every attempt, every difficulty overcome, and even every mistake were part of something greater? When we begin to think this way, things really do seem different. The phrase I heard yesterday started to make even more sense to me.
When you care about what you are doing and learn to find pleasure in your routine, working hard stops being just an obligation and can become a desire. Every step becomes a small achievement, and not even cloudy days can make you think about giving up. This was a somewhat poetic way I found to keep moving forward and stop thinking only about the results.
After some time, the result begins to become just a consequence. And when the path is followed with dedication, care, and consistency, there is a good chance that it will be a positive consequence. But even if the result is not exactly what we imagined, we will still have lived and built something along the way.
I believe this can be applied to almost everything in life. One of my greatest difficulties has always been finding a way to take care of myself because I used to do it while already thinking about the result. I wanted to change something and would immediately start imagining what I would be like in the future. Little by little, I realized that the result loses some of its importance when we find pleasure in our daily routine.
Going to the gym, for example, was almost a nightmare for me because I only thought about what my body should look like. Every workout felt like nothing more than a necessary obligation to achieve an image I had created in my mind. But after I stopped focusing on that and started paying more attention to what I was doing every day, everything became more enjoyable.
Today was really cloudy and a little cold. When I woke up at five in the morning, I could not hear that annoying little voice that always said, “Sleep a little longer, just for today.”
Maybe that little voice went away because even it realized that it is better to keep going. That it is better to get up and face the cloudy days. After all, not every story is built beneath a beautiful, sunny sky. There are cold, quiet, and difficult chapters, but they are also part of who we are. And what fun would there be if things were monotonously good?
And it is through these days that I have been telling my story. Because a story is not told only by its ending, but by everything that happened throughout the journey. By the paths we chose, the difficulties we faced, the moments when we almost gave up, and, above all, the times when we kept going.
That is what I have been trying to focus on. Not only on reaching the end, but on learning to live and appreciate every part of the journey. Because perhaps the result is only the final chapter, while the real story is being written every day, even on cloudy days.
