Last weekend, I rented a house in the countryside for my son's birthday party. We stayed there all weekend and it was a lot of fun. During those two days, I took the opportunity to take some photos of the things I found interesting. Perhaps it's a good time for those who like to photograph insects, as it's at this time of year, here in Brazil, that they start to come out of their cocoons, holes and hiding places.
While I was sitting and relaxing, I noticed a large beetle moving around in the grass. This piqued my curiosity, and as I had my cell phone in my hand, I decided to take some pictures of it.
I'm a bit obsessed with insects. I find them fascinating and, perhaps, I have a special sympathy for beetles, I like the sturdy shape they seem to have. I once heard that it would be physically impossible for beetles to fly, either because of the aerodynamics of their wings or the small size of their brains. I don't know if that's true, but I've always enjoyed watching them and admired the effort they make to fly around.
I remember when I was a child, at times like this, when the beetles go out to breed or do whatever they do. On the lampposts, several would fly around, attracted by the light. Back then, I would watch these beetles, and when they fell to the ground face up, I would go and swat them away. But it was a thankless job: as soon as they flew back up and fell again, they were on their bellies again, and it went on and on. It was an endless activity.
I find the diversity of the beetles very interesting. This one, for example, had a joint in the middle of its thorax, not all of which are like that. Some have claws and not all are black. Later that same day, I saw a metallic beetle, with various shades of color that changed as the light hit it, but when I thought about taking a picture, it just flew away. That was only the third time I've seen a metallic beetle in my life, and it's beautiful. I rarely see those huge ones with rhino-like horns. Maybe those are my favorites.
Anyway, this is a great time to admire these little guys, and I hope there will be other opportunities to find different species. When I find them, I'll take more photos!
