This week, I was talking to a coworker about things we use and sometimes don't even know the meaning or origin of. For some, certain objects can attract evil; for others, this is nothing more than superstition. Still, it's a topic that many people take very seriously.

During the conversation, my colleague mentioned carrancas. He said that, in the past, he knew people who had these sculptures in their homes and believed that they brought bad luck.

He also said that when he was a teenager, his parents bought a house and started renovating it. During the renovation, they found a doll hidden between the walls—but it was no ordinary doll. The bricklayer who found it said that the object could be some kind of spiritual “work.” Coincidentally (or not), the former residents of that house said that after they moved there, their lives did not prosper. The house had already been sold three times, and my colleague's parents were the fourth owners. After discovering the doll, they decided to put the property up for sale and chose not to live there.

This conversation reminded me of my trip to Morro de São Paulo. In a local art gallery, I noticed that some pieces had a more mystical aesthetic, such as gargoyles and representations of deities from other religious traditions. For some people, these symbols may be seen as something negative; for others, they represent culture, protection, or faith.

I am not writing this to criticize any religion, but to reflect on how certain objects carry different meanings depending on one's beliefs. There are indeed practices that many people believe are done for evil, but there is also a lot of ignorance and personal interpretation involved.

This was just a short account and reflection on how beliefs and symbols can influence our decisions and perceptions.

Essa semana estava conversando com um colega de trabalho sobre coisas que usamos e, às vezes, nem sabemos o significado ou a origem. Para alguns, certos objetos podem atrair o mal; para outros, isso não passa de superstição. Ainda assim, é um tema que muitas pessoas levam muito a sério.

Durante a conversa, meu colega comentou sobre carrancas. Ele disse que, no passado, conheceu pessoas que tinham essas esculturas em casa e acreditavam que isso trazia maus presságios.

Ele também contou que, quando era adolescente, seus pais compraram uma casa e iniciaram uma reforma. No decorrer da obra, encontraram uma boneca escondida entre as paredes — mas não era uma boneca comum. O pedreiro que a encontrou afirmou que aquele objeto poderia ser algum tipo de “trabalho” espiritual. Coincidentemente (ou não), os antigos moradores daquela casa diziam que, depois que se mudaram para lá, suas vidas não prosperaram. A casa já havia sido vendida três vezes, e os pais do meu colega seriam os quartos proprietários. Após a descoberta da boneca, eles decidiram colocar o imóvel à venda e optaram por não morar ali.

Essa conversa me fez lembrar da minha passagem por Morro de São Paulo. Em uma galeria de arte local, observei que algumas peças tinham uma estética mais mística, como carrancas e representações de divindades de outras tradições religiosas. Para algumas pessoas, esses símbolos podem ser vistos como algo negativo; para outras, representam cultura, proteção ou fé.

Não escrevo isso para criticar nenhuma religião, mas para refletir sobre como determinados objetos carregam significados diferentes dependendo das crenças de cada um. Existem, sim, práticas que muitas pessoas acreditam serem feitas para o mal, mas também existe muito desconhecimento e interpretação pessoal envolvida.

Esse foi apenas um pequeno relato e uma reflexão sobre como crenças e símbolos podem influenciar nossas decisões e percepções.
