75th Anniversary Peanuts Silver Commemorative Bar

Growing up in the late 70's and early 80's there was no lack of cartoons to watch. I always loved Looney Tunes with Bugs Bunny, Scooby-Doo, He-Man, the Transformers, Inspector Gadget, Voltron and even The Smurfs. That was back in the day that cartoons came on every Saturday morning, talk about ancient times... One that I also enjoyed was The Peanuts featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

Snoopy was hilarious with his vivid imagination and Charlie Brown was never able to kick football because Lucy would pull the ball away at the last second. Then there was the kite eating tree, that without fail would be stealing his kite. He is the eternal lovable loser. The other characters were entertaining, especially Linus in his undying faith in the Great Pumpkin, that will eventually appear on Halloween while he waits in the pumpkin patch rather than trick or treating. And none of the parents could be understood...

This year is the 75th Anniversary of the creations of the comic strip The Peanuts. As a silver commemorative 4 Troy ounce silver bar has been created to celebrate the event.

From APMEX.com

This silver bar is a limited production of only 275 units, meaning it will be a scarce collector's item. What I don't like about it is it's printed rather than stamped like a regular silver bar, round, or coin. It is retailing for $179.99 for four Troy ounces of silver so not horribly priced, and is in presale right now. It will undoubtedly sell out quickly and become a sought after collector's item. I just wish it were a struck piece rather than printed. I won't be buying one due to lack of available funds, opportunity cost at it's finest. I'll probably regret it down the road, but it is what it is!

Charles Schulz

Public Domain, Schulz in 1956

Born in Minnesota in 1922 an only child, he was a big fan of comic strips. His uncle gave him the nickname "Sparky" after a horse in one of his favorite comics strips called Barney Google. I kid you not, Google. He was an intelligent child and skipped two grades, which resulted in feeling very shy in school being much younger than the other students. That shyness later appears in Charlie Brown. Snoopy was based on a dog the family had when he was a child, apparently pictures are fairly similar in markings to Snoopy.

In 1943 he was drafted into the US Army to fight in World War II. He was a staff sergeant in charge of a .50 caliber machine gun team and served in Europe. According to Schultz, he only saw combat near the end of the war, and the one time he tried to use his weapon he had failed to have loaded it. Having been in the Army, that would have been humiliating. Fortunately, the German soldier he was about to shoot surrendered, so he walked away without ever having to take another's life in the war.

His comics were created from experiences in his own life and characters often based on himself. It went into publication in 1950's and went on to become one of the most successful comic strips in history. At it's peak Schulz was earning $30-40 million a year off of the comic strip. Not too bad considering that today adjusted for inflation that's close to $100 million a year. Illustrators to this day often credit him as an inspiration. Even comedy great Bill Murray credits his comics as a major influence in his comedy.

The comic ran until the year 2000 with the death of Shultz from a heart attack in his sleep. The comic continued to run for several weeks after his death, as they were created for weeks in advance. Since then more movies and Peanuts specials have been created and are still popular, although not as much as they were when I was young. But everyone I know continues to love Snoopy!

That will wrap up this Wednesday edition about this nice silver Peanuts item. If I had more funds I would definitely buy one. I hope you enjoyed seeing this hefty four Troy ounce silver commemorative beauty. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always thank you so much for all of your support. It's deeply appreciated. Have a great Wednesday everyone!

I don't remember peanuts (maybe I'm too young?) but I remember Snoopy! Loved it haha.

Snoopy is funny, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts are still around. They made a movie a few years back. It's just not as popular as it once was...

Nice bar...some sellers here are selling the 0.5g gold, which for me was a bit expensive to buy but it is cool =)

If it were at spot that would be awesome, but it never is! I wish I could afford this 4 ounce bar, but not in the budget. It sucks not being rich sometimes!

How's your dad doing?

That really isn't too horrible of a price if you are a fan and you are able to get your hands on one. I might be remembering wrong, but I think @ericvancewalton is a Peanuts fan, so I wonder if he will try to pick up one of these.

For the scarcity it's a great price!

If I were a bigger fan I might consider hunting for one. I enjoy Peanuts, but I was never a huge fan like some people are.

Wow, that is very cool! Charles Schulz grew up and lived just a few miles from our old condo. Thanks for tagging me here @bozz. I'm going to see if there are any of these left.

That is really cool! They're still in pre-order so you should be OK!

Oh man... I loved all those saturday morning cartoons you mention. I still have my Voltron figure.

That is a damn cool Peanuts silver piece. I remember reading those year 1 Peanut strips once in a collection. Very different from what came later, but not without a lot of charm. It's easy to see why it became as popular as it did before he started phoning it in later in life.

As we all age those creative forces aren't what they once were, that's for sure. Saturday morning cartoons were awesome weren't they? My Voltron figure is long gone sadly..

I have only one Charlie Brown silver coin.
I don't remember where it's stored at the moment.

What a classic series, and much less complicated than today's cartoons! I have the same problem with my stuff, I can never remember where I have it stored away. Most is not out of state in trusts, California is not a tax friendly state when you die...
