We started May quietly, making do with what we had in stock and whatever fresh produce we could buy.
The second week was a right mess, but we finally got our finances sorted, which meant we could pay our bills and restock a bit.
Nous avons commencé le mois de mai, tranquillement, avec ce que nous avions en réserve et ce que nous pouvions acheter en produits frais.
La 2e semaine a été sacrément perturbée, mais nous avons enfin été régularisés financièrement, ce qui nous a permis de payer nos factures et de refaire un peu notre stock.

Minced meat was on special offer, so I had it with a salad to make sure it wasn’t too heavy on the stomach. Stress already messes with our digestion enough as it is.
La viande hachée était en promo et je l'ai accompagnée d'une salade pour ne pas que ce soit trop lourd à digérer. Le stress perturbe déjà suffisamment notre digestion.

The next day, I sprinkled a little pepper over the salad. I buy the red onions in a jar; they’re packed in sweet vinegar. In fact, the label says ‘sweet-and-sour sliced onions with sugar and sweetener (saccharin)’ , it’s Belgian!
Le lendemain, j'ai ajouté un peu de poivre sur la salade. Les oignons rouges, je les prends en bocal et ils sont conditionnés dans du vinaigre sucré, d'ailleurs l'étiquette précise "oignons aigre-doux en rondelles avec sucre et édulcorant (saccharine)", c'est du belge !

We had the rest of the veal and pork mince with this salad, along with some potatoes.
Avec cette salade, nous avons mangé la suite du hachis porc et veau, avec des pdt.
Savoyard pizza /Pizza savoyarde
The weather has turned cooler, so we’ve chosen a Savoyard pizza as our pizza of the week.
La météo s'est rafraîchie, nous avons donc pris une pizza savoyarde comme pizza de la semaine.
Fried potatoes, chicken, beans and green pepper sauce /Pdt rissolées, poulet, haricots et sauce au poivre vert
I’m still making room in the freezer by eating this chicken and these fried potatoes.
Je continue de faire de la place dans le freezer, en consommant ce poulet et ces pdt rissolées.

The next day, there wasn't much left, but I made a bit more pasta.
Le lendemain, il ne restait pas grand-chose, mais j'ai fait un peu plus de pâtes.
Hamburger sub, with Brazil sauce /Mitraillette-hamburger, avec sauce Brazil
A few days earlier, some of Ithara’s online gaming friends had been going on and on about eating chips, and it had been several months since we’d had any. So we went to the Turkish chip shop to get a ‘mitraillette-hamburger’, which, in Belgium, means a bread roll or baguette filled with burgers, sauce of your choice and chips.
It’s meant for one person, but we never manage to finish the chips if we have one portion each, so we order one for the two of us with a double portion of meat, and then we finish the whole thing.
We both like the Brazil sauce, which is slightly sweet.
Quelques jours plus tôt, des copains de jeu en ligne d'Ithara n'arrêtaient pas de parler de manger des frites et cela faisait plusieurs mois que nous n'en avions pas mangé. Nous avons donc été à la friterie turque pour nous prendre une mitraillette-hamburger, qui, chez nous, en Belgique, signifie un pain/une baguette garnie d'hamburgers, de la sauce de notre choix et de frites.
Au départ, c'est prévu pour une personne, mais nous n'arrivons jamais à la fin des frites si on en prend une par personne, donc, on en commande une pour nous 2 avec double ration de viande et, là, on la termine en entier.
Nous apprécions tous les 2 la sauce Brazil, qui est légèrement sucrée.

After that dietary indulgence 😂, we had a simpler, less fatty meal.
Après cet écart diététique 😂, nous avons mangé un repas plus simple, moins gras.
Green beans and rocket pizza /Fin des haricots et pizza roquette
We stuck to our weekly pizza tradition, opting for the rocket pizza, and at the same time finished off the beans left over from the previous day’s meal.
Nous n'avons pas dérogé à notre pizza hebdomadaire, en choisissant la pizza roquette et nous avons terminé, en même temps, les haricots qui restaient du plat de la veille.

A nouveau un repas plus léger avec ces dés de poulet et ces légumes émincés sur un lit de spirelli.
Dining: ‘House special’ stir-fried noodles and duck with imperial sauce /Resto : Nouilles sautées "spécial maison" et Canard à la sauce impériale
On 12 May, we had a networking breakfast at 9.00 am, but we were stuck in traffic for over two hours on the motorway because of a major accident involving lorries that had blocked all lanes. It happened 200 metres ahead of us, just before the exit we were due to take. There was no way to get through. We managed to let them know we’d be late, and then that we wouldn’t be making it to breakfast at all. The traffic cleared at 11.15 am, so we took advantage of being in the area to pop into the garage for some paperwork, making the trip worthwhile. By then, it was almost midday and I hadn’t planned anything for lunch.
To cheer ourselves up, we decided to go to the Chinese restaurant near our home, which we hadn’t visited for about two years. We each ordered a set menu, as we knew we’d take the leftovers home to eat for lunch the next day. The portions are very generous.
Le 12 mai, nous avions un petit-déjeuner de networking à 9h00, mais nous avons été bloqués, à l'arrêt pendant plus de 2 heures sur l'autoroute à cause d'un gros accident impliquant des camions qui bloquaient toutes les bandes de circulation. Cela s'est passé à 200 mètres devant nous, un peu avant la sortie que nous devions emprunter. Impossible de se faufiler. Nous avons pu prévenir de notre retard, puis de notre absence au petit-déjeuner. Cela s'est débloqué à 11h15, on a profité qu'on était dans ce coin-là pour passer au garage pour une tâche administrative, ainsi, on a rentabilisé le trajet. Ensuite, il était quasi midi et je n'avais rien prévu pour le repas.
Pour nous remonter le moral, nous avons décidé d'aller au resto chinois près de chez nous, où nous n'avions plus mis les pieds depuis 2 ans environ. Nous avons pris chacun un menu, puisque nous savions que nous emporterions les restes du plat pour manger le lendemain midi. Les plats sont très bien servis.

There was about half the food left. That was enough for me; I didn’t need to add any starchy foods.
Il restait à peu près la moitié des plats. Cela m'a suffi, je n'ai pas eu besoin d'ajouter des féculents.

Ithara also kept half of his meal, which he was able to eat with chopsticks, as he likes to do.

We’d picked up the shopping the afternoon before, and I’d taken advantage of a special offer on chipolatas.
For once, I didn’t buy any tomatoes, but I replaced them with green olives seasoned with herbs and garlic.
Nous avons été récupérer les courses l'après-midi précédente et j'avais profité d'une promo sur les chipolatas.
Pour une fois, je n'ai pas pris de tomates, mais j'ai remplacé par des olives vertes aux herbes et à l'ail.

I also picked up some chicken strips to make a fairly light meal.
J'ai aussi pris quelques aiguillettes de poulet pour faire un repas assez léger.
Kouign-Amann
To mark Ascension Day, our town organised celebrations in the town centre, including a craft market, a flea market and a funfair, amongst other things.
Whilst strolling around, we tried kouign-amann, a Breton speciality, and as we really enjoyed it, we brought some home for our dessert or afternoon snack.
Pour la fête de l'Ascension, notre ville organisait des festivités au centre-ville, avec un marché artisanal, une brocante et une kermesse (attractions foraines), entre autres.
En s'y baladant, nous avons goûté au kouign-amann, une spécialité bretonne et, comme nous l'avons bien appréciée, nous en avons ramené à la maison pour notre dessert/goûter.
Breton cake with prunes /Gâteau breton aux pruneaux
At the same Breton stall, from the Concarneau area, we also sampled the prune-filled Breton cake and the salted caramel Breton cake. We decided to buy the prune version.
For transport, they had to wrap them in plastic, as these cakes are very sweet. And besides, this allows them to attach the label listing the ingredients and all the mandatory traceability information.
Au même stand breton, de la région de Concarneau, nous avons également goûté au gâteau breton aux pruneaux et au gâteau breton au caramel salé. Nous avons décidé d'acheter la version aux pruneaux.
Pour le transport, ils étaient obligé de les emballer sous plastique, puisque ces préparations sont fort sucrées. Et puis, cela permet d'ajouter l'étiquette avec les ingrédients et toutes ces petites informations obligatoires pour la traçabilité.
This second week was a bit of a whirlwind and left us exhausted, but we’re making the most of the weekend to rest up before another week packed with meetings and events.
