The Unexpected Squash Blessing

Happy Tuesday Hivers!

We have another piece of land that is a bit far from our garden. The only plants growing there are banana trees. Since we haven't visited it for several months, maybe almost a year, we have no idea what it looks like now or what has happened to it.

Yesterday, someone whose house is located right next to our land came to our garden. She asked my mom if we had any squash growing. My mom told her that ours were still just seedlings. The neighbor then handed a plastic bag to my mom containing a whole squash. My mom was really surprised and asked how much it cost, but she replied that it was completely free."

She told my mom that she had planted squash on our land. She mentioned that there are actually many more fruits, but they are still small and not yet ready to harvest. My mom was really surprised because she didn't expect it at all. There is no fence around that land, so anyone can easily access it. Sometimes, when the bananas bear fruit, they are the ones who harvest them and bring them to us. My mom is always happy because the neighbor is very honest; she really delivers the produce to us, of course, they keep some for themselves too.

Since I absolutely love squash, I was really happy when I found out about it and saw the squash itself. Since I was cooking pork bone soup (linat-ang bukog sa baboy) for our lunch today, it was absolutely perfect for the dish. I decided to add the squash to it instead of potatoes.

We are just very thankful to have a neighbor who took the initiative to cultivate the land and bring us its produce.

This experience made us realize how lucky we are. It became a source of food and a way to build a good relationship with our neighbor. It’s amazing how a simple piece of land can bring people together and bring unexpected blessings to our table.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
