Peak season for mangoes

This is the best time of the year when we get a lot of mangoes in our place. Mango grows during the summer season when the heat is high. Among the other seasonal fruits available, mango is at the top. Some commercial companies freeze mangoes and use them for juice throughout the year. There are also places where mango is available throughout the year. But now is the time when it is available in abundance.

Usually, during the Mango season, our family consumes a lot of mango. We use mango in different forms and mostly in different cooking dishes. As there are different varieties of mango available, we just don't eat it like a fruit, we have multiple uses for mango. I have a few mango trees around my house, and we get a lot of mangoes from those trees. I would like to list some of the use cases of mango, or how we consume it.

As a fruit

Well ripen mango is selected and consumed as a fruit during the season. Many people also pick organic mangoes where there are no fertilizers or chemicals are added to the mango to ripen it. It is hard to find such mango, but mostly if we get the fruit directly from farms and try to ripen it ourselves, we will be able to achieve that. Mangos that are coming from commercial markets may not be fully natural. We have to be careful about that.

Source

There are many types of mango available, and India is one of the biggest exporters of Mangoes. One of my friends bought about a box full of mangoes to the UK and used them for almost a month. Many people prefer eating mango as a fruit, but for some people it doesn't work out well as it increases the heat in the body and creates stomach pains. We usually drink mango juice as a milkshake, which can reduce the effect of this problem.

Mango as a pickle

This is the next common way of consuming mango. There are multiple ways in which a pickle is prepared. Every type of mango has a different taste and they are used for differnt types of pickles. We make a pickle with the help of baby mangoes, and the other type of pickle is with the well-grown mango. It is usually cut into pieces and let to ferment for pickling.

Before making mango pickle, the mango is treated very well to remove any harmful chemicals. Usually, when we pick a mango from the tree, it leaks a waxy kind of substance. This substance is not very good for the skill. If our skin comes in contact with that wax, it creates a burning sensation and irritation.

Over here in my country, we have it in large quantity too whenever it's its season such as this one. Apart from juice which most people are not fond of especially in the village, we usually eat it as fruit

The mango looks appetizing. When it is ripe and yellow, it will look even more appetizing.

Same here in the Philippines, mango season starts when it's dry season around April, May, until July. The most common type of mango is the one we called Indian mango. It's a bit round and shorter compared to the usual mango that is mostly consumed ripe. We often consume Indian mango unripe, whether pickles or eat them plain with salt and chili. Some mangoes are perfect for juice, especially the ones we call carabao mango. We just add milk and ice to the grated or diced ripe mangoes and its perfect!

When I was young, we had a lot of mango trees in our farm. It was such a feast for the eyes seeing them bloom and fruit abundantly. However, because of the strong typhoons that hit the Philippines, all of these mango trees were gone.
