Splinterlands: Winnig My First Gold Foil Arcane Card, Surgeblade!

When Splinterlands introduced the new card set of Conclave Arcana they also created some new classes of cards. These being the black foils and the arcane variants of black and gold foil cards. The can be obtained by opening Conclave Arcana and Escalation packs and increase your odd slightly using potions. They can also be won at auctions or as a reward in the weekly drawing for those who complete the daily goals in Modern. There is a caveat though, you must purchase a Fortune Pass which costs 125 DEC weekly to be eligible.

For quite some time now I have been buying the pass but had no luck in the drawing. My luck finally changed this week when I was shocked to find I had won a card!

I had pulled a Surgeblade in gold foil arcane, finally I had an arcane card in my collection! I had several black foils from drawings in Frontier mode, but this was something even rarer!

To be completely honest, I already had a level five gold foil Surgeblade, but the nice thing about the arcane and black foil cards is they are automatically maxed out. That means the new card is level ten and comes with Charge so it can attack from any position, Reveal unmasking a camouflaged opponent's card each round, and with Blast applying 50% extra damage to adjacent units to the card you successfully attack. To really use the Blast ability you will need a maxed out archon however, and that can be expensive to buy or rent in Modern.

This will be the first time I use this the new card in battle, lets' see how it goes!

This battle was in Modern with a pretty good mana cap of 56. There were no extra rulesets tacked on in this particular match which was nice. The above screenshot was taken after the buffs were applied but before the action has started.

For my archon I went with Marlai Singariel, which gives every magic monster on my team one additional magic attack. I chose Blue Wyrm Travesty as my tank and followed that up with Torrent Sniper. Next I decided to place Phlegmost with Mindless Thrall next in the lineup. To round things out I chose Captain Fellblade and last I place Surgeblade. In retrospect, I should have place him after Phlegmost, but it still worked out in the end!

My opponent went with Kavorn Skarn as archon. The tank chosen was Comander Slade followed by the Night Reaper. Ironically, next they also chose to use Surgeblade with Dragon Egg Forager next in line. To finish up Mindless Thrall and Syrenth were placed, with the latter being a taunt card. Really not too bad of a lineup to be honest!

By round two both tanks are getting weak and Syrenth has already fallen.

By midway through the round my opponent loses two more cards. It's starting to look like the team may be in trouble!

By round three my opponent is down to the last two cards and things are pretty much over at this point. My Blue Wyrm Travesty finally went down for the count...

Here Surgeblade delivers a nice hit contributing towards the end of the match.

Plegmost delivers the final deathblow. Good game to my opponent! My heavy magic attack just overpowered the opposing team and in less than three rounds it was all over. As I mentioned earlier, Surgeblade should have been placed earlier in the lineup, but it still worked out!

That was my first win using my gold arcane Surgeblade! It really is a nice card that I have been underusing on my water teams. I'm going to have to work on making better use of this card in the future, because it really is a useful card!
