One of the decisions I find interesting in Splinterlands is choosing a summoner before building the rest of my team. It might seem like a small part of the battle, but the summoner can influence how effective my monsters become. Sometimes, two teams can contain similar monsters but perform differently because their summoners provide different advantages. This has made me realise that choosing a summoner should be one of the first things I consider when planning my strategy.
In the beginning, it is easy to focus on individual monsters because their attacks, health, and abilities are clearly displayed. However, the summoner helps determine how those monsters work together. Depending on the card, a summoner might increase friendly monsters’ stats, weaken the opposing team, or provide another advantage that fits a particular strategy. Choosing the right one can make my available mana go further and help my team perform more effectively.
One summoner I find interesting is Kelya Frendul. This Water summoner gives friendly monsters additional speed and armor. The extra speed can help my team attack earlier, while the armor provides some protection against physical attacks. I like this combination because it supports both offense and defense without forcing me to rely entirely on one type of monster.
For example, if I build a Water team with a durable front-line monster and several damage dealers, Kelya Frendul can help the team become more difficult to defeat with physical attacks. The speed boost may also help some of my monsters act before their opponents. However, I still need to remember that armor does not normally protect against magic damage, so I cannot assume that this summoner will solve every defensive problem.
Another summoner worth considering is Obsidian, which increases the magic attack of friendly Earth monsters. This makes it an interesting choice when I want to build a team around magic damage. Rather than selecting monsters randomly, I can look for cards that benefit from the extra attack and use them together to create a more focused strategy.
What I like about this example is that it shows how a summoner can influence the cards I select afterward. If I choose a summoner that improves magic attacks, I should consider monsters that can take advantage of that bonus. If I choose one that improves speed or armor, I should think about how those benefits support the rest of my formation. The goal is to make the summoner and monsters complement each other instead of treating them as separate decisions.
Of course, summoners also come with limitations. The available mana can affect which one I choose, and the elements available in a particular battle may restrict my options. Some summoners might fit my preferred strategy but leave me with too little mana for the monsters I want to use. In that situation, I may need to choose a different summoner or adjust my team to make the most of the resources available.
I also need to consider the opponent. A summoner that works well against one type of team might be less useful against another. Extra armor can be valuable against physical attacks, but it may not help much against an opponent who relies heavily on magic. Similarly, additional magic damage is useful when my team can attack effectively, but it does not automatically protect my monsters from incoming damage.
This is why I want to pay closer attention to the battle rules before choosing my summoner. Some rulesets can change which strategies are effective, making it necessary to think beyond my usual preferences. Instead of selecting the same summoner every time, I can consider the available monsters, the mana limit, and the benefits that would be most useful in that particular battle.
Another lesson I am learning is that a good summoner cannot compensate for every weakness in a team. Even with useful bonuses, I still need a suitable tank, enough damage, and a sensible arrangement of monsters. If my team lacks balance, the summoner’s advantages might not be enough to help me win. Every part of the formation has to work together.
As I continue learning Splinterlands, I want to become more deliberate about this decision. Rather than choosing a summoner simply because I recognise the card or like its ability, I want to understand how it fits the team I am building. A thoughtful choice at the beginning can give the rest of my monsters a better foundation and help me approach each battle with a clearer plan.
