Making Better Use of Healing in Splinterlands

One thing I have been thinking about lately is how much healing can influence the outcome of a Splinterlands battle. It is easy to focus on attack power when building a team, especially when I want to defeat my opponent quickly. However, a monster that can recover health may survive longer, giving my team more opportunities to deal damage and control the battle.

One card that caught my attention is Merdaali Guardian. This Water monster has the Tank Heal ability, which restores health to the friendly monster in the first position. I find this ability interesting because it can help keep my frontline alive while the other monsters continue attacking. When facing opponents with consistent damage, having a way to restore health can make a noticeable difference.

However, healing is not a guaranteed solution. If the opponent deals too much damage in a single round, the frontline monster may still be defeated before healing can make a difference. This means I need to consider the amount of damage my team can withstand and whether my healer will have enough time to support the frontline.

I also need to think about positioning. A healing monster is usually more valuable when it can remain alive long enough to use its ability repeatedly. Placing it carelessly could expose it to attacks, particularly when the opponent has monsters with Sneak or Opportunity. Protecting support monsters is therefore an important part of building a balanced team.

Another thing I find interesting is combining healing with a durable frontline monster. A monster with plenty of health or strong defensive abilities can benefit from repeated healing, potentially making it difficult for the opponent to defeat. The challenge is finding the right balance between durability and offensive power. If I focus entirely on defence, my team might survive for a long time without dealing enough damage to win.

This is where mana management becomes important. Every monster has a cost, and the available mana determines how much I can include in my lineup. If I choose an expensive healer and a powerful tank, I may have fewer resources left for damage dealers. I have to decide whether the healing strategy is worth the sacrifice or whether a simpler lineup would be more effective.

The battle rules can also influence my decision. Some rulesets encourage defensive strategies, while others reward a more aggressive approach. Before selecting my team, I want to consider whether healing will provide enough value under the conditions of the match. I should not choose a healer simply because its ability is useful in general; I need to determine whether it fits the particular battle.

I have also realised that healing works best when the entire team supports the same plan. A durable frontline, a reliable healer and monsters that deal consistent damage can complement one another. Each card has a different responsibility, and the team becomes more effective when those responsibilities fit together.

At the same time, I must remember that my opponent may have ways to counter a healing strategy. Strong damage, attacks against the backline and abilities that reduce healing effectiveness can all create problems depending on the cards and ruleset involved. This means I should not rely on a single ability to carry my entire team.

For me, this is another reminder that Splinterlands rewards careful thinking. Choosing cards is only one part of the process. Understanding their abilities, positioning them correctly and recognising the strengths of the opposing team are equally important.

I want to keep experimenting with different combinations of tanks, healers and damage dealers. Instead of judging a card only by its attack or health, I want to understand the specific role it can play in helping the whole team perform better.
