Greetings Splinterlovers 💚

To understand the Splinterlands ecosystem—both its gameplay and its economy—there’s one thing every player must keep in mind: Splintershards, or, as everyone knows them, SPS tokens. This is essential if you want to take the game seriously, since everything surrounding it revolves around this famous governance token. Additionally, I’ve read comments from some people saying that SPS needs more use cases to drive demand, and while certain features could indeed be implemented, the reality is that SPS has unique in-game utilities that encourage holding, which in turn limits mass sales.

For this reason, I want to write this very specific post about SPS—not just to mention its uses or what we can do with it, but to provide a basic yet detailed analysis of its inflation, deflation, how it behaves in relation to prices, and all the factors that cause the price to have “demand” or, conversely, “supply.” That’s why, for new players, all this information I’m about to share in this post will be extremely valuable, especially if you have no idea how to progress in the game.

So, if you want to learn how the SPS is actually structured, what’s currently happening with it, its price, and more details, keep reading because this is something you’ll find interesting:

Key Features of the SPS

Since the SPS token was launched, it has established itself as the ultimate utility asset within Splinterlands; what I mean is that it’s no longer optional, as it’s the driving force behind economic efficiency for both players and the game as a whole. Basically, if you don’t engage with SPS, you won’t have opportunities to progress, which means you’re not really taking the game seriously; that’s why I’m emphasizing this. So, with that clarified, let’s look at the most notable uses:

  • DAO Governance: With a treasury that manages millions in assets, SPS allows token holders to vote on changes to reward pools, partnerships, and the use of reserve funds. Therefore, anyone who stakes SPS has the right—and, in a sense, the responsibility—to vote and shape the game’s future in accordance with the community’s interests. The idea is that we all benefit from this.

  • Reward Multipliers: The r-shares system now relies heavily on Staked SPS, although this has been the case for quite some time. This means that without staking or an amount of SPS commensurate with the player’s rating, the return on investment (ROI) per victory would be severely impacted—regardless of whether you’re an incredible player who wins many battles; simply put, if you don’t have SPS, your rewards will be nonexistent.

  • Staking Over Vouchers: Vouchers remain essential for pre-sales of sets like Conclave Arcana and for maintaining production in Lands, as well as for other purposes, such as acquiring exclusive cards that can only be obtained with these “Vouchers.” Therefore, despite many of its changes, one of the SPS’s most important functions is undoubtedly the ability to earn this token, which, as I mentioned earlier, is very important in Land plots.

⁣What is the current “Supply” dynamic of the SPS? Inflation vs. Deflation

The balance of the SPS is a constant tug-of-war; think of a game where, on one side, inflation is pulling on a rope, and on the other, deflation is doing the same. This is basically what keeps the economy in balance; on one side, money is issued, and on the other, it is destroyed, although the real question is: Which side is pulling harder than the other?

Here is a table that illustrates exactly that:

Source of InflationAbsorption Mechanism (Deflation)
Validator Nodes: 3.75 million SPS per month for license operators.Burn for DEC: The "peg" mechanism that burns SPS when the DEC price rises above $0.001.
Ranked Pools: Direct rewards for battles in the Modern, Wild, and Survival leagues.SPS-to-Glint: The option to burn SPS to double Glint in Silver+ leagues.
Staking Rewards: Declining issuance for liquidity providers.DAO Proposals: Community-approved mass burns to reduce the supply.

Clearly, this is a clear winner for the team, as we constantly see emissions from the rewards that are claimed daily. On the other hand, the burning mechanisms are great, but DEC is not currently at parity, which means this isn’t happening right now; however, the other two methods do, as do other third-party initiatives that support this effort, such as the platform called “Elmo-Burns,” which also burns SPS the more active you are on the platform—whether by making transactions or, of course, by participating voluntarily.

Analysis of the recent correction ($0.01 to $0.005)

The 50% drop in price has raised concerns within the community. Since the price rose quite rapidly—which is great—it fell just as quickly, partly due to the current market situation. Although the market has improved slightly, the setbacks were severe. However, there is an explanation for this, and analysis reveals technical rather than fundamental causes, bearing in mind that the fundamental aspect is directly linked to the work and updates the team typically releases.

So, with that in mind, let's take a look at what caused it:

1. Sales Pressure in Survival Mode: High-efficiency automated systems and bots in Survival Brackets immediately cash out their profits to cover the operational costs of renting cards, with the goal of staying in the game as long as possible. Of course, the SPS goes straight into staking, but withdrawing it is actually quite simple and depends on how much you decide to withdraw, which creates a fairly clear selling pressure.

2. DEC is trading below its parity: Because DEC has been trading slightly below parity, SPS’s active burn mechanism (which triggers when DEC exceeds $0.001) has been inactive, removing one of the strongest buying pressures from the market. Although I’ve already mentioned this, it also indirectly creates selling pressure for SPS.

3. Set Cycle Exhaustion: Following the release of Conclave Arcana, the market entered a typical sideways consolidation phase ahead of Phase 3 of lands.

Conclusion

With all this, you now have a complete manual with everything you need to know about these new cards that will soon be available to create in Splinterlands. They are the first of their kind and undoubtedly among the most valuable ever created in the game.

I hope all of this really helps you prepare for this event, and if you have any questions, please feel free to comment on this post, and I will be happy to help you.

With nothing further to add, until next time, "Splinterlords."

I invite everyone to join Splinterlands, the best game based on chains of blocks, full of adventures, battles, and strategies where you will have fun and get rewards according to your league
