Two Birthdays In A Hospital Taught Me What Celebration Really Means.

(edited)

While growing up, I can remember vividly how my parents celebrate birthdays for us children. We were not rich but to some extent we were comfortable, so they would always try their best to make the day count. Sometimes we celebrate it with neighbors, other times it's just us and our cake, zobo drinks, biscuits and family pictures.

But as time goes on things started to get a little bit hard and we couldn't afford such anymore, coupled with that, we the children were becoming teenagers and adults too, so our birthdays were just like another day, you wake up to a birthday song and prayers, other times it's just the prayers alone. And after that, the day's activities, work, chores and all continues.

Along the line, life came for me and decided to take me on a journey, a journey to learn.

I became seriously ill and I happen to celebrate about two of my birthdays in sickness, I was on the sick bed in the hospital. That was when my perspective changed, you can't be on the sick bed fighting for your life and be thinking about some birthday cake, parties and the likes, not at all. The only thing that matters at such a time is good health, it's how to get out of that sick bed. That was when I come to the realization that being alive and in good health is already a celebration on it's own.

Not that I don't celebrate my birthdays now, I do, just that I've planned on celebrating it differently henceforth. I celebrated my last birthday in the hospital, the same hospital where I was being admitted some years back. I went there with some packed food and drinks, shared it and spent some time encouraging some of the patients. The feeling and joy I got from doing that is one no birthday party would have given me

So to answer the question about if I'm a celebrator of my own birthday or a celebrator of other people's birthdays, I would answer that it's a mixture of both, because I celebrate my life by celebrating others.

The same will happen on my next birthday, my prayer is just that God should continue to give me good health and also bless me with the resources needed to visit, reach more people and also do more. Being able to encourage someone, sort out their hospital bills, or make them smile. That to me, is the perfect birthday celebration.

Having good health is the greatest gift there is, which is why I think birthdays are important—because we often forget to give thanks. Hugs
