Hi, what's up geek mates?, I hope you are all doing well, it's nice to see ya again. Welcome to my first post about one of the most beautiful videogames produced for the Nintendo Entertainment System, our beloved NES, and this game is nothing less than the mythical Kirby's Adventure. As always, this will be a Retro-gaming blog where I will tell you how my adventure goes in this fantastic game : )
Tech note: For this gaming blog I'd been using the emulator FCEUX Emulator for the NES.
It was in 1993 that Kirby's Adventure, an action-platform game, was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was in 1993 that Kirby's Adventure, an action platform game developed by the Japanese video game developer HAL Systems, was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Kirby's Adventure was the second video game of the Kirby saga, and whose director would be the famous Masahiro Sakurai, who in addition to being behind the creation of Kirby, would also be responsible for the development of the very famous series of Nintendo video games, Super Smash Bros. It is also important to note that in this second installment of Kirby was included for the first time one of its most characteristic powers, which is the Copy Ability, which allows you to absorb powers from their enemies.
Something that I liked a lot from the first moment I played this game was the animated tutorial that is given in the initial menu before starting the main campaign, as it shows us through an in-game gameplay how to use all the gameplay features of this Kirby's Adventure, from the basic moves, the Copy Ability and how to use the new powers acquired from each enemy absorbed by our pink and spherical friend.
And the adventure begins on level 1, which is known as Vegetable Valley, and for this the game gives us a brief introduction where it shows us an initial fight against one of the most iconic enemies of this level, and who is known as the 'sharpe knight', who shows you right off the bat that he is a very skilled one.
Something I really like about Kirby are all the stats that we have to control from the beginning, if you look at the GIF above, we have a damage bar where you can see the amount of damage points that Kirby can take, and you can also see the power you have selected and the amount of lives remaining. On the other hand, to absorb an enemy's power, you first absorb it with B and then press: B + ↓.
The wide variety of powers that can be absorbed from enemies is a really fantastic feature, which I honestly think gives a great replayability component to this game. For example, from the very first instances of the Vegetable Valley world, you can use a variety of powers for Kirby, for example, I found the Beam and Spark powers very helpful, as I found them very useful for taking down enemies without taking much damage.
If you are low on health points, you can always recover your health points by consuming this red insect-shaped item with an m on it.
After finishing an area where waterfalls abounded, I reached the goal and exited into a sort of catapult that launches you into a special section of the Vegetable Valley map where you can find many doors that transport you to other sections of this first world.
Since not everything is perfect and I am not the most skilled gamer ha ha ha, I actually lost a life, which I was able to recover thanks to this kind of mini-game that simulates one of those classic game machines you can find at carnivals, where you have to use a rather weak mechanical claw to grab a stuffed animal, in this case a Kirby stuffed animal, and try to take it out of the machine to get an extra amount of Kirby lives as a reward : D .
Note: You only have two credit that means that you only have two chances to try to get those extra Kirby lives.
It was great to make up for lost lives and gain two more through the previous mini-game. You then enter through one of the doors in this separate section of the map to move on to the second area of Vegetable Valley, where I was impressed when I picked up some sort of star that catapulted me at full speed to a fairly high up area of the map that was crawling with enemies. I reckon the star feels very Super Mario Bros, what's your opinion?
Wow! So fast and I already had to face a sub-boss called 'Poppy Bros Sr' with whom I lost a life and a fantastic power called Cutter, that I had obtained which consisted in launching a kind of flying knife. But I found it much easier to take this sub-boss down by using his own bombs against him, which he absorbed and threw at him.
Note: The power of this sub-boss is called Crash and consists of a big explosion that eliminates all the enemies around us.
One of my favourite powers that I highly recommend you to use is the fire spitting power called simply as 'Fire', and you can get it in Vegetable Valley from the enemy called Hot Head.
In good time I met the Sharpe Knight for the first time along the way, who proved to have a high resistance to damage and to be lethal with the sword, so to take him down I had to use the explosive power called Spark.
After defeating Sharpe Knight I went back to the separate section of the map where you unlock the door that takes you to the third part of Vegetable Valley and there appeared more enemies, again very Super Mario Bros. style, and those cannons called 'Shotzo' really are undeniably inspired by the classic Super Mario Bros. cannons.
Fighting fire with Beam power. I think Beam power is superior because you can attack with this power from a wider variety of angles, due to the movement of the Beam.
Graphically this game is amazing, at times it feels like a 16-bit game from the Super Nintendo SNES. The game features a wide variety of environments as soon as you start the adventure. I really liked how you can use a sort of water gun by pressing B when you are underwater.
Ouch! Those Heat Heads can do a lot of damage to Kirby with their fire attacks, for example if they hit you directly, Kirby will be blasted red with flames, leaving you with no response to movement for about two seconds. Always keep an eye out for the red bugs that can be used to restore Kirby's health points, but be careful as they are often well guarded.
Finally and before moving on to the fourth part of Vegetable Valley, I accessed another mini-game, which consists of defeating a special enemy in a 1 VS 1 combat, and this is isolated in a room so that after defeating him you can take his special power. In this case it was a 1 VS 1 against a Sharpe Knight, so the power I got was called Sword, which gives a powerful sword : ) that I think will make the way easier in the next stage of Vegetable Valley.
The next step is to go through door #4 and continue to the goal, but I'll show you that in the next Kirby's Adventure post, mate : )
