Here's a confession from a lifelong tabletop strategist: the single most elegant mechanic in modern board gaming isn't dice, isn't cards, and isn't the trade table. It's the quiet, brutal art of worker placement — and once you learn to see it, you can't stop noticing it everywhere in crypto.
So pour a coffee. Today we're doing a Blockchain Board Game Mechanics deep dive on the mechanic that, more than any other, describes what you're actually doing every time you touch a chain.
What Is Worker Placement, Really?
If you've played Agricola (2007) or Lords of Waterdeep (2012), you already know it in your bones. You have a limited pool of "workers" — little wooden meeples. Each round, you place them one at a time onto action spaces on a shared board. Chop wood. Bake bread. Recruit an adventurer. Build a wing on your farmhouse.
The genius is in the contention. Most spaces hold one worker. If I plant my meeple on the "Take 3 Wood" square, that square is now closed. You wanted the wood? Tough. You go somewhere else, or you pay a premium later.
The whole game becomes a silent negotiation over scarcity and timing. Not "do I have enough resources?" but "can I grab the action I need before the person to my left does?" The great designer Uwe Rosenberg built entire cathedrals of tension out of nothing more than a shortage of chairs.

Block Space Is the Action Board
Here's the thing that made me sit up straight one night mid-game: a blockchain block is a worker-placement board.
There are a finite number of action spaces per round — that's your block's capacity, its gas limit, its byte budget. Everyone at the table wants to place their "worker" (a transaction) into that limited space. And when demand exceeds the spaces available, you don't just wait politely. You bid for position.
Priority fees, gas auctions, the whole mempool — that's a worker-placement scramble with money as the tiebreaker. The mempool is literally the pile of meeples hovering over the board, waiting to see who commits to which square this round. Miners and validators are the referees deciding placement order, and they've noticed (as any Power Grid veteran will tell you) that turn order is worth paying for.
The design lesson that tabletop nailed decades ago: the value of an action isn't fixed — it's a function of how many other people want it right now. Chains re-learned this the hard way during every congestion event in history.
Staking: You've Committed Your Meeple
Now here's my favorite overlap, because it's the one people miss.
In heavier worker-placement games — think Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar (2012), where your workers ride giant rotating gears — placing a worker isn't a one-and-done action. You commit it. It sits there, locked, generating value over time, and you can't use it for anything else until you pull it back. The longer it stays, the bigger the payoff — but the less flexible you are.
That is staking, described perfectly by a board game that predates most staking mechanisms by years.
When you stake, you take a worker (your capital) off your active board and you place it on a slot. It's committed. It's earning. And it's no longer available for other plays until you unbond it. The unbonding period is just the game telling you: "you can't yank your meeple off the gear mid-rotation — wait for it to come around."
Delegation? That's hiring another player's worker to sit on the space for you and splitting the yield. Liquid staking? That's the genuinely clever Tzolk'in move of finding a way to get value from a committed worker while it's still committed. Designers call that "engine efficiency." It's the same instinct.
Governance: The Vote Is Just Another Action Space
Let's push the metaphor one more square.
In Lords of Waterdeep, there's a whole layer where you're not just gathering resources — you're playing Intrigue cards and jockeying for influence over which quests matter. Some board games (Republic of Rome, Twilight Struggle on the geopolitical end) make the shared board itself the prize: place your workers to shift the rules everyone else has to live under.
That's DAO governance. A proposal is a shared action space. Your tokens are your worker weight. And the fascinating, slightly uncomfortable truth that both governance tokens and hardcore Euro-games reveal: whoever controls the most placement power controls the board's future — not just their own farm. Republic of Rome has ended more friendships over this than I care to admit.
What Tabletop Can Teach Crypto Designers
Here's where I get on my little strategist soapbox, because there's real signal here.

So here's my closing move, and I mean it seriously as a design prompt, not a pitch.
Imagine a blockchain deliberately designed as a worker-placement game. Your wallet holds a fixed pool of "action meeples" that refresh each epoch. You place them on the shared board — a transaction space, a staking gear, a governance seat, a liquidity square. Contention is visible. Turn order is auctioned in the open. Committed pieces show their return timer right on the interface. NFTs aren't jpegs on a shelf — they're unique worker pieces with special placement abilities, and a vault is the box you keep your set in between sessions.
We're honestly not that far from it. Every mechanic already exists on-chain; we just haven't drawn the board so people can see the game they're playing.
Because that's the whole thesis, isn't it? You're already placing workers every time you sign a transaction. You're already paying for turn order. You're already committing meeples to gears.
The only question left is the one I always come back to: it's your turn — what are you going to do with it?
