Education And Success, Should There Be A Debate

The road to success as we have been told countless times is never an easy one. Though some successful people get it relatively easier than others who have become successful, I still believe it’s never an easy ride. People come out with different reasons to their successes in an attempt to encourage us to maybe try out some of the methods they used. We tend to listen to these people and that is why it is no surprise motivational speakers, books, audios and videos are in such high demand.

Right from our childhood or schooling, we are told “education is the key to success”. The number of times this particular statement is repeated will never make you forget it. I still remember the very first I heard this. Since the first time, all my other teachers from primary till Senior High school kept repeating these words. In university you do not hear these so much. I certainly haven’t heard that since I started my university. Everyone is busy chasing their dreams to have time for such words and I guess it is because not a lot of people really believe this anymore.

Do I believe it Education is the key to success? Not entirely if I am being honest, I don’t believe that. Why do I have divided opinions on the matter? This will have to do with the fact that there are several people who have become successful without stepping their foot in classrooms. I guess by going down this route, I am talking about formal education. Education is far more than just the classroom but I think when we are talking about things like this, we mean formal education. Am I right?

I do believe however with education, you can become more successful. I say this because, back at home when you compare a successful person who has been to school to another who has not been to school, most at times you see a vast difference. You see most of the times that an educated person who is running a successful business has a different level and feel to their establishment than one who hasn’t been to school. I don’t know maybe it only applies to where I am from but that is how I see it.

To make a simple comparison, in my high school, my physics teacher had a “Sobolo” and plantain chips business he was running. In the same school others were selling Sobolo and plantain chips way before he started but he become more successful than them because he introduced something different. He added his knowledge from school to his business and knew how to brand himself.

He packaged his products very well that it became a thing in the town I was schooling. He called it MVP Sobolo and plantain chips. I also believe with education you can become more successful because let’s take most businesses as an example. Even if the business owner hasn’t been to school, you rarely see him or her hiring people who haven’t been to school. They tend to look for graduates and have we asked ourselves why? Maybe there’s no special reason to this but I believe they know that hiring people who have been to school will help their business and bring something they’ve been missing.

So yeah, for these reasons I believe that education can play a part in your success although it is not the only factor for success. With education, you become more successful as far as I am concerned.
