Showing love to ourselves would make the world a better place

It's so true that life is not always easy or pleasant. There are inevitable ups and downs - times of joy and times of sorrow. Yet both the good and bad play a role in making our journey complete. The key is learning to embrace the messy whole, not just the highlights.

When I was younger, I had this naive expectation that life should be constantly happy. I figured keeping a positive mindset alone could smooth out the rough patches and struggles. But reality, of course, proved much more complicated.

As an adult, I've come to accept that challenges and setbacks are guaranteed. No one's path is seamless. What matters most is how we navigate the low points and process painful experiences.

In my darkest moments, it can be tempting to beat myself up and question my worth. But added suffering seldom stems from self-judgment. Extending the same grace and care I'd give a dear friend helps me through.

Rather than resistance, I've found there is power in learning to lean into difficult seasons, sit with discomfort and acknowledge it fully. The only way out is through. This too shall pass.

Equally important is savoring and giving thanks for the breathers between hardships. The joyful intervals, however brief, sustain us for the next battle ahead. Balance manifests over time.

Some of my most rewarding breakthroughs and periods of growth have followed deep pain. Healing and wholeness come layer by layer. Patience with the process allows lessons to emerge.

At the end of the day, perfection is not possible, or even desirable, on this journey. We are works in progress, and that is as it should be. The beauty is in the gradual upward ascend, not the summit.

My goal is to give myself, and others, more grace knowing everyone is a mixture of virtues and flaws. Life will never be all sunshine and rainbows, nor should we expect it to be. What we need most is self-love to light the way through both good times and bad. The rest unfolds as it should.

During peaceful stretches, I try to proactively build resilience for harder seasons I know will come. Taking care of my health, relationships, and spirituality strengthens my foundation.

Practicing gratitude in all circumstances shifts my mindset from scarcity to abundance. I train my focus to notice the gifts surrounding me, even in the darkest times.

Allowing myself to fully process emotions and release them constructively prevents burying pain that will resurface later. Journaling, exercise and creativity help me healthily work through feelings.

When struggling, I am gentle with my inner critic. Self-compassion provides the safety to be vulnerable and ask for help without shame. We all need support sometimes.

Looking back at previous hardships I overcame gives me confidence I have the tools to weather whatever lies ahead. If I made it through before, I can again.

Rather than fighting reality, I work on aligning my expectations with what this imperfect life reasonably offers. Wishful thinking causes needless frustration.

Savoring fleeting joys - a good meal, a friend's smile, a sunset - brings me fully into the present. Small delights keep hope alive.

At my best, I greet each new day as an opportunity to practice wisdom and courage. Progress, not perfection, remains the goal. Just showing up with an open heart allows growth.

The ups and downs sculpt us into who we are meant to become. I aim to embrace it all with faith, resilience and care for myself and others along the winding road.

That’s something I’ve also decided never to do again:beat up myself if things don’t go well and question my worth.
