CONQUERING MY INFERIORITY COMPLEX

Inferiority complex is an act of feeling less about oneself among peers, business partners, and several other aspects. It can come in different forms, ranging from psychological to financial and much more, depending on the situation. I personally have been a victim and have experienced being in a situation where I felt inferior. Today, I'd like to share my ordeals with you.

Like I said, I've had to deal with an inferiority complex on several occasions, and each cut across different aspects, like my personality traits, finances, academic performance, and the like. I'll also talk about how I overcame each one, and I hope someone finds this helpful in their bid to overcome their inferiority complex as well. Without further ado, let's look into each one.

Like most people here already know, I'm an introvert, and even though I don't really want to change to another trait now, a few years ago I wished I was an extrovert due to what being an introvert caused me. I just gained admission into the university, and after our matriculation, I was in search of a roommate with whom we could both share the bill to rent a room as the school doesn't have a dedicated hostel for students.

This I must do because I don't have enough money to rent a room alone, so in my quest to find a roommate, I walked up to many new students like me with the hope of being their roommate, because obviously most of us were new to the environment and knew no one. Unfortunately for me, I guess being too calm and gentle with my speech made many avoid me, even though they were still in search of a roommate.

I can even remember calling the numbers of some who made a small banner and pasted it around the school so prospective roommates could call them. I did call some people, and just by my speech, I was turned down by many, and those who didn't turn me down on the phone did the same after we met physically. These acts made me feel inferior with my traits because, right before my eyes, others were quickly catching up, making friends, and getting roommates, even though they didn't know each other before.

At the end of the day, I couldn't go back home because my house was very far from the institution, and lectures began immediately, so I had no choice but to prepare my mind to sleep in the open within the school premises, hoping that I'd try my luck the next day. Fortunately for me, a senior student came to the school in the evening, saw me lying down, and made an inquiry about why I was there. In the end, she offered me the opportunity to stay with her, and I ended up staying with her for two years before she graduated.

Overcoming that inferiority complex wasn't easy at all, but I was able to overcome it all thanks to making a resolution within my mind. For example, making a resolution within my mind helped me overcome this because, at the end of the day, I ended up staying with someone for free for two years, while those who rejected me had to pay rent for those two years. I saw that as a win, and projecting it so in my mind helped me get over the situation, and by the time the lady graduated, I had already made some friends with whom we later became roommates.

Another aspect where I felt inferior was also during my school days. After leaving that lady and staying with my new roommate, most of them came from well-to-do families, unlike me, whose father had to struggle to pay my school via loan. I had to deal with an inferiority complex when we had to contribute money to buy items for the house, such as appliances, foodstuffs, and the like. Others were able to give whatever amount was required except me, and this happening consistently made me feel less about myself.

Overcoming this inferior complex also boils down to my mind first, because I had to sit myself down and wonder how long I'll continue to depend on my parents for most of my financial needs, after which I decided to follow some caterers who cook and serve food on different occasions, and via that job, which I did every weekend, I got to earn some extra money to pay those bills, and I also brought loads of food home, which helped reduce the amount we spend on food and cooking. At the end of it all, I see myself as equal with my roommate since I can now match up with everything they contribute in other ways.

That's all about my inferiority complex dilemma and how I was able to overcome it. This article was published in response to the Hive Learner Community Features prompt, which you can get more information about here.

Thanks for your time, have a prosperous week ahead.

Hmmm,
Interesting!
As we mature we see things differently and we call ourselves to order.

Inferiority complex shows up in a variety of ways and if we're not careful it will keep us from a lot of things that'll help us grow as individuals. I'm glad your accomodation issues was resolved.

At first, I want to say you were lucky otherwise you would not receive the help of that seniors. She was indeed a very good human and allowed you to stay 2 years without any fee. Maybe God send her to help you.
Inferiority complex is a natural thing and we all face it at some point in life. Most of us are able to overcome it with time like you did.
