What's up plebs?

Trumpy boy is back with yet another German silver mark ! 🇩🇪

Let's first see some shots before learning more about the actual coin:

As always, I like to take a guess what's the coin is about before doing any further research or reading the inscriptions.

This time I'll say it's about a painter as this old dude seems to be drawing or something...

Turns out I got close enough.. Although I got the old dude part 😂

This commemorative 10 mark piece was issued in 1992 for the 125th birthday of Käthe Kollwitz:

This is an artist I had never heard of before. Here's a super quick rundown of her life:

Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), born in Königsberg, was a German artist best known for her works in printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. Her work was influenced by the socio-political turbulences of her time, like World War I and II. As a result, her art is often centered around themes like poverty, injustice, and the human condition. Her most famous art cycles, are The Weavers and The Peasant War. She was the first woman not only to be elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts but also to receive honorary professor status.

Anyways, Wikipedia has a great page on her if you want to learn more about her life and see some of her art.

Moving on the other side of the coin we have as always a unique design of the German imperial eagle

Engraved here we have the denomination (10 marks), mintage date and the words BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND for FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY.

The coin edge is engraved which is a nice bonus for coin lovers 🥳

received_6821758504566656.jpeg

It reads

ICH WILL WIRKEN IN DIESER ZEIT

Which translates to

I want to act in these times

The motto apparently encapsulates Käthe Kollwitz's artistic philosophy and her belief in the role of art as a force for social change during her time. At least that's what Chatgpt told me it does...which makes sense though considering the theme of her work :)

When it comes to silver, this piece weights 15.5 g, made of 0.625 purity. Or about 9.7 g of pure silver.

Let's see how silver is doing today

Exactly where we left it two days ago, at 0.78 per g. Meh.

Ok frens, this is it for today. Hope you enjoyed checking yet another piece from my collection and hopefully learnt something new!

See you soon with more silver!

Those were the days. Deutsche Mark had value at the time, not like today's money.

Germans love commemorative coins as much as Canada from what you’ve shown. But it’s silver and it adds up.

All hail the imperial German chicken!

In all seriousness, I don't understand why these commemorative coins aren't 80%+ silver when they're not meant for circulation?

Still, it's a cool history behind the coin. 🙂

I think they were actually meant for circulation! Some are 0.925 but most are at 0.625 like the one in this post

Really? Usually, you don't think of commemorative coins being made for circulation. Interesting.

Oh wow, I won! Thanks so much for the HBIs! Reblogging again just for fun. :D

Today's coin reminds me why I used to enjoy numismatics so much as a kid. It's a window to an incredible amount of knowledge that might never cross our paths if we were never to look outside our insular little worldview. I know of so many countries (some now gone!) because of the coin, paper money, & stamp collecting I did when young.
