The Niue 2024 Gold Fairy Penguin Coin

The other day I was browsing through new coins being produced this year by the island nation of Niue. It's a small tropical island in the South Pacific that has in recent years become a major player in the production of commemorative coins despite having a population of less than 1,700 people. The island paradise has been producing some of the finest silver and gold for years now, and collectors have taken notice.

While browsing I found some items that I would very much like to add to my collection. I have always been fond of animal coins so this particular one caught my eye. I have always loved penguins since I was a child, but personally seeing them in the wild in in Punta Arenas, Chile made me love them even more! This coin features the smallest of the penguin species commonly known as the fairy penguin. They are common in New Zealand and Australia and are cute little birds. Have a look at this coin, it's gorgeous!

What I love about this coin is the detailing. The details on the birds, the sand, the water, and the moon are spectacular. The highlighted portions are done in platinum which is really a nice contrast. On top of that it's one Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and limited to a mintage of 150. These could very well become much more valuable once they sell out! This coin sits very high on wish list since at the moment. I don't have the spare cash available to pick one up as gold is trending over $2300 an ounce and the list price on the coin is $2895 currently. That's a pretty steep premium! But if we have a nice run on crypto it may become an easy buy. I'm crossing my fingers, I would love to own one of these!

The fairy penguin is commonly know as the little penguin as it is the smallest of the penguin species. They have a distinct blue color as opposed to their monochromatic cousins. They typically grow up to 12 to 13 inches (30 to 33 cm) in height and weigh 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg). They are seabirds that dive for their food sometimes even to the ocean floor, and it often consist of small fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. They produce one to two clutches of eggs yearly which seems to give them large enough numbers to survive even with introduced predators like feral dos and cats.

I have never seen this penguin in person. Here it the US it's only kept in three zoos none of which I have ever visited. That's why we have the internet I suppose... I've always wanted to make the trip to New Zealand and Australia, if I do seeing some fairy penguins will be high on my to do list.

I know I have shared a similar picture in the past and shared a lot more demographics about the island. But being a lover of tropical islands and having lived in the tropics for years I had to at least share one beautiful shot of the tropical waters and the the island. I can already see myself snorkeling there right now....

That will wrap up my post for today. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and take a look, all of your support really is appreciated! If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to leave them below. Have a great week everyone!

For some reason I haven't really been a fan of two tone coins in the past. This one is done really tastefully and I kind of dig it.

I'm not usually fond of them either, but this one came out really nice. It's nice that they used platinum for it as well rather than silver. I usually prefer my coins uncolored and pure!

I love tropical islands, nothing quite like them. I miss living in the Caribbean!

My Ex grew up on St. Lucia, so I've spent a bit of time there and the close islands.

Steep premium on it that's for sure, but it will likely appreciate. Many of their low mintage runs are much more expensive now once they sell out.

Gold is just really expensive right now, and I don't think it's getting any better any time soon!

I love it! I've always thought penguins are a cute type of animal.. I love how they wiggle haha. I don't think I'd buy it for that price though :)

It's an expensive one, but gold isn't going down any time soon... If we had a huge drop in price it might be a great buying opportunity! Penguins are very cool birds!
