New additions to our local swan 🦢 family

Hello Hello feathered friends and all sunny people of the Hive

At the end of last week I made this post Big Swan Little Swan Contest Reflection Hunting and ended by saying I would make a full post this week with an update on our local swan family.

Today is that day for this swantastic 🦢 post

New additions to our local swan family.png

If you live in the UK then you know we had a gorgeous June and then July has been a typical British summer i.e. catch the sun in between the rain showers.

I popped up to our local park to feed the swans and ducks and as it turned out the moorhens and coots too!

8066 FF 31 July 23 Swans 2.jpg

I spied the swan family at the other side of the boat pond, so walked round to the wee boat jetty thingy.

8068 FF 31 July 23 Swans 1.jpg

Dad saw me and made a beeline straight to me...

8067 FF 31 July 23 Swans 3.jpg

Mum came out of nowhere and was shepherding the kids towards me.

8069 FF 31 July 23 Swans 4.jpg

I have not named any of the cygnets this year. There are five though.

8074 FF 31 July 23 Swans 5.jpg

With a coy look I was being sniffed at! It's all good, they remember me.

8077 FF 31 July 23 Swans 19.jpg

As birds they are getting pretty big now and would be the biggest in the park.

8091 FF 31 July 23 Swans 21.jpg

If it was not for mum and dad that is!

8093 FF 31 July 23 Swans 20.jpg

8076 FF 31 July 23 Swans 6.jpg

They are so fluffy, they still have some of their baby baby fluffy feathers and the next stage is to get some white feathers, that is when I call it their camouflage mode.

Do you see their monster feet though!

8098 FF 31 July 23 Swans 7.jpg

I love the orange colour it reminds me of their adult bills.

The cygnets at this age remind me of gangly teenagers not knowing what to do with their long legs!

8097 FF 31 July 23 Swans 8.jpg

See what I mean...

8070 FF 31 July 23 Swans 9.jpg

But they are a cute set of cygnets this year. Only five survived compared to the six we had last year.

8072 FF 31 July 23 Swans 10.jpg

And like any good children, they copy their parents!

8062 FF 31 July 23 Swans 11.jpg

See how they curl their necks and can preen themselves, well most of them do! Just like kids there is always a stroppy one!

8082 FF 31 July 23 Swans 12.jpg

8081 FF 31 July 23 Swans 13.jpg

Mum and Dad are looking good now though and start to fatten themselves up again now that the kids are eating on their own.

You can see how much thicker of a neck Dad has got than Mum, but they are both in fine fettle.

Dad has been perfecting his hiss, and has spooked a few people which is always interesting to see! yep I am naughty lol.

8094 FF 31 July 23 Swans 14.jpg

Remember I said the kids should copy their parents, well this wee one is trying to copy someone much bigger!

8089 FF 31 July 23 Swans 15.jpg

You can see how big he is from the tree leaves that are behind him!

8095 FF 31 July 23 Swans 16.jpg

I have taken many swan pics over the years and that above wee cygnet headshot has to be one of my favourites.

8087 FF 31 July 23 Swans 17.jpg

Did you see the different head markings in the big swans, well that is not surprising really.

8060 FF 31 July 23 Swans 18.jpg

Yes the big swans are not feathered swan but fluffing boats!

8052 Reflections 27 july 2023 1.jpg

You can rent them, but I have not seen anyone use them, mind you I tend to go to the park either around 7am or 5pm so probably not for rent then!

There we go... A wee update on our growing swan family at the end of July 2023.

@coquicoin and I know @lhes like to see the babies so here you go, and this is my version of your piglets @jellyvine.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

We used to have swans every year on our local pond, but then there was an explosion of Canada Geese, which aren't native to the UK. I haven't seen a Swan there since. I guess they have been pushed out, which is a shame. I used to love seeing them, they are so majestic.

Oh that is a shame. We get the odd goose here, but the swans go into attack mode and chase the goose away, I think the most I have seen at any one time is 2 geese and they are no match for 2 swans.
They are majestic, that is one of the things I like about them.

The problem is the number of Canada geese we have. I've noticed a drop in the number of other native birds like Mallard ducks, coots, and moorhens. The Canada geese need culling, but many local people like them, so it would take a brave official to even suggest such action.

When I was up in Orkney I noticed that they have goose hunts, they should do that down your way.
I remember they used to cull the seals too. Invasive species upset the local ecosystems and need sorting out.
We are lucky in so far as the moorhen numbers have increased this year as have the coots, the mallards are pretty steady.

Aww. How I wish I could have these. I don't have a body of water here if it's not raining so it's impossible. I'm getting some ducks though, and hopefully, I'll find a good source of water on the farm by then.

These birds are so majestic!😍

This year was the first time since before the pandemic they have been on the pond, and the weather has been pretty crap so not rented one out yet.

I love it so much a swantastic 🦢 post 😍

I have not named any of the cygnets this year. There are five though.

Come on Eddie W. every swan deserves a name, so put your brain to work 😂

The photo of the cygnet's head is beautiful. It may be my favorite of the ones you've taken too.

Thanks for a swantastic start to the week, Super Ed 🦢💙 Have a magic one 💙🌀

Hehe listen to you! Yeah Yeah I have to think of names I know.

I liked the wee head as it had the baby grey fur I call it.

I thought you would like it and am glad that you did!

So yes let's all have a magical week Super Eli 💙🦢💙

Really if it has monster legs hahaha, I had not imagined that the leg of a swan would look like this, in fact I think I've never seen one from up close.

And then there's the ugly duckling.....however;, ignoring that! I love your selection of swans. I remember the glorious June weather. Visiting all the delightful country estates and seeing the beautiful swans. It took me living in the UK a couple years to not be surprised to see flesh flashing all over the place whenever a splash of sun was out. Here in SA it is mostly sunshine so we are not prone to strip at a moment's notice to get Vit D

Why does it feel like at some point you told them to pose for pictures 😅. These were amazing shot. I liked them a lot and I hope you also get shot when the babies get white feathers and orange beaks.

Did you see the different head markings in the big swans, well that is not surprising really.

well, they clearly differentiated between the female and the male . Hilarious 😂
