Bring your brolly for this capital walk in Edinburgh Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hello Hello Let's take a walk in Edinburgh.

As you may or may not know Edinburgh in Scotland is where I grew up and it is always fun to go back and see how things have changed.

And change they do, especially in the City Centre where we are today.

One thing that never changes is the Scottish weather and today was no exception!

So pick up your umbrella or brolly 🌂 and let's go.

First things first a spot of breakfast 🥓🥙!

image.png

I do love a breakfast muffin. We are right in the centre now and this is a route I used to take to and from school🎒.

We walked through St James Quarter the new shopping centre and are at the back of it. See all that fluffing rain 🌧.

image.png

We are now standing on Little King Street which is rather appropriate as it is here where they put the statue you see of the famous boxer Ken Buchanan 🥊.

image.png

Ken is considered by quite a few folk as the greatest boxer 🥊 the UK has produced. He was a lightweight and after a six year appeal for funds, this statue of him was unveiled on August 2022. It is a nice touch as he is still alive and you can read about it here

image.png

Can you see that rain chucking it down?

image.png

I bet you saw Big Foot 👣, did you see the ankle to the right?!

But wait ...

image.png

There is a hand as well!

What the fluff🙃

A few yards away from the Ken Buchanan statue and outside St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral is The Manuscript of Monte Cassino.

These are three huge bits of a body, a foot, an ankle and a hand.

Together, they form a poignant statement on the horror and destruction of war.

Created by Edinburgh-born artist Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 – 2005), the work is thought to have been created as a reaction to his experience of growing up during World War II.

Source

They have never known what to do with this part of Edinburgh. To be truthful it is a bloody disgrace and the council should be ashamed of themselves! Years ago there was a massive roundabout here, and they constructed a monstrosity of modern art that looked like a load of neon tubes thrown together!

image.png

Now there is no more roundabout and they have the trams (another council fcuk up that has cost millions upon millions), but years later and there are still fluffing roadworks!

image.png

This is the top of Leith Walk, and yep still raining! The roadworks though, the shop owners are so pissed off with it all. It has been years on and off and they keep fncuking around with this road.

This is a part of Edinburgh that I know extremely well as I had digs here in a couple of places when I was at Uni in Edinburgh.

If you look on the far right, you can just about see that the buildings are indented and that is because another road is running parallel, that is called Elm Row and where I shared a flat with some unsavoury characters. I survived though to tell the tale.

Think Edinburgh think the original Trainspotting film 🎥 and the big H! It was Europes capital for Heroin use after all.

image.png

Turn to our right and we see more roadworks and another familiar couple of roads.

On the left is the big London Road. And yes, if you follow it, in theory you will end up in London some four hundred and two miles away.

image.png

After I moved from the Heroin flat of Elm Row I moved in here. The road that you see going up the hill is called Blenheim Place which is quite an unusual name as Blenheim Palace is down south in England.

What made it freaky was that my parents lived up north in Aberdeen in a street called ... Yep you guessed it ... Blenheim Place!

How fluffing weird was that!

Well where the church is, is called Blenheim Place and then it becomes Royal Terrace once it levels out. I stayed in Royal Terrace overlooking the gardens!

The church btw is ⛪️ Greenside Parish Church ⛪️ a Protestant Church of Scotland, which is Scotland’s national church, within the Presbytery of Edinburgh.

image.png

Edinburgh does have some cracking buildings which we just take for granted.

So the trip to Edinburgh was of course a shopping trip. We are back standing in the road at the junction of London Road and Leith Walk.

The fluffers had no pedestrian crossing now!

So it was time to run 🏃🏃‍♀!

Did you see what was the first shop that Mrs T wanted to go to?

image.png

📚 Yep a bookstore! 📚

There has been a book shop on the corner here for as long as I can remember, so that is a fair length of time.

Now though it is part of a chain Topping & Company Booksellers

I shall make a separate post about this visit to the bookstore aswe are getting rather lengthy already in this post and we have not wrapped it up yet.

I did want to grab a coffee in the bookshop as they do have it and little tables to sit at.

Spoiler Alert .... This did not happen! I was a bit disappointed to tell you the truth but did buy a couple of books.

image.png

I do believe that things happen for a reason!

Do you?

We ended up having a wonderful coffee and a doughnut in St James Centre

image.png

Krispy Kreme, they have some fluffing tasty doughnuts!

My favourite is glazed, what is yours?

As the weather was attrocious we did all our shopping and actually ate twice in St James Quarter!

This is a new Continental style shopping mall so parts of have no roof and appear to be leaking with the rain!

Talking of water, let me leave you with this clever but cute sign and bowls!

image.png

And there we have it, a quick wee tour of the centre in Edinbrugh, now you can dry yourself off!.

image.png

This is also my contribution to #wednesdaywalk from the terrific @tattoodjay

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

Thanks for this awesome walk! I got a bit wet as my umbrella had holes in it, but it was worth it! And it was authentic with the rain... :)
That warm coffee at the end was the real deal!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!

In the rain, perhaps fewer people on the sidewalks, not ideal getting soaked!

How annoying that they removed trams (we had them too), disruption to city putting the back (wish our trains and trams still ran), call it stupid move... Cities know not what they doing, dig up close up, to open again idiots!

Love the watering hole for furry friends, that is awesome!

The furry friends watering hole was awesome, but we never saw any in the centre, good thing is that it is right in the centre of the city, so I know there will be pups in and out of there!
Have a great week Joan

Unlike your region where dogs are allowed, most places here they are banned. Always nice to see someone walk in with a Great Dane to slobber that sparkling floor, now don't tell me they only allow handbag size!

haha

don't tell me they only allow handbag size!

I am a big dog lover, so no there is not a size restriction. Now you have me curious, so next time I am there I shall find out!

Noticed in our parks where leashes are required that small dog owners appear to think they are exempt.

No one I know has been bitten by a bigger dog, have a few in the family with bites/nips from small breeds.....

Little dogs are ankle biters, I will be honest that are the ones I am wary off.
A big pup you just let him come to you if he wants, the little ones well different and so easy to step in their mess, as you say the small dog owners think they are exempt from everything!

This was a nice walk, well except for those body parts and the road mess and the rain too 😅 But thank you for the tour, Tito Ed. And for the Krispy Kreme that just made me starving when it's almost time to snooze, !LOLZ

Thank you for the little tour of Edinburgh! My great grandparents came to the US from Lothian and it looks quite different now than old photos I’ve seen. I also like the regular glazed krispies the best myself hehe, especially when you get them right off the conveyor belt!

Oh did they really!
Yes, it will have changed from then until now, hell it even changes from ten years ago until now!
The regular ones, you can't beat IMHO, the conveyor belt, do you know that they had one and it was the first time that i had seen this!

It really spoils you! Now when i randomly go into one I'm always disappointed if it doesn't have the conveyor belt, and i can't buy them in grocery stores anymore lol

Wow so much rain, still a lovely walk through Edinburgh. I would like to visit again as those 3 nights in April last year were not enough to explore much.
Have a lovely week further Ed 👋🏻😊

Krispy Kremes are pretty amazing. Especially when you can get the fresh out of the oven. They just melt in your mouth. I haven't had on in forever and now I am craving them! I think the first time I had one was in NYC. That breakfast sandwich looks pretty amazing. @ericvancewalton was just saying the other day that he wants to visit Ediburgh one day. Hopefully he sees this post!

They made them on the premises and were bloody tasty I have to admit. Now talking about them, I want one!

I enjoyed your tour and the "brolly".... the new-to-me name for umbrella.

"What the fluff?" made me laugh. Always another way of saying the same thing.

Krispy Kreme, the universal treat. I don't know what which is my favorite, but you just about can't beat a fresh warm glazed. I am not so into the "cake" donuts, but in the fall here, they have a pumpkin spice one that is rather nice. I never turn down a vanilla creme filled either.

Ah "cake" donuts, now I don't get those at all!
A pumpkin spice one... you guys do love all things pumpkiny when it comes to fall!

Fluff and fluffing, yes the meanings there but a polite way to say thins hehe!
And when it rains, don't forget your brolly☂️🌂

All good though, and hope your rain has stopped, as it has stopped here now!

Hello, Super Ed!
Thanks for the walk around central Edinburgh, it was nice despite the rain, hehe.
Your time living on Elm Street must have been quite an experience that I don't even know how to describe.
Too bad you didn't get your coffee at the bookstore but that glazed doughnut sure was worth the disappointment and I hope the coffee to go with it was up to par.
Happy Thursday when you wake up 🌀

Super Eli good morning when you wake ⏰⏲️
Yes Elm Street was an opener, and it always brings back memories when I walk around that part of Edinburgh!
The bookstore was a let down right enough, but there were some wonderful treats we had, the Krispy Kreme being one of them😁

It's great feeding my eyes to those wonderful images of a place you were birthed. Going there brought memories down to your spine and seeing how you saw the road that leads to your school would definitely make you remember your mates and favourite teachers then. That was a cool time in Edinburgh.

Ken Buchanan

Does Ken have a sister or wife named Josie Buchanan? I found her as an artist while looking for a beautiful music for TTT.

Those ankles and hands are so huge... Irkk, they are statues 😁😁😁

Happy Valentine to you, Mr Teng!
I already read the love letter that @funshee sent to you? 😎😎😎
