Rescue of the Ganges

In the ancient state of Malayasen, there was a Brahmin, whose wife was having illicit relationship with others. The Brahmin was dissatisfied with this and one fine day, left his wife and home. The lady did not stop her wrongdoings and had a daughter borne to her from the illicit relationships. To avoid social embarrassment, she left the daughter at the cremation ground and abandoned her. The kid was crying loudly, that is when a Jackal (or fox) coming in search of food, found the girl. Looking at such a small beautiful kid, sense of kindness was born and the Jackal decided to take the girl home and raise her as her own daughter. Over the period of time, the girl, grew up and the Jackal enlarged its hole (home) bigger to accommodate her. Eventually she stepped into youth. Every day the girl goes out of the hole and swims in the nearby river, dries her hair and goes back into the hole. One day, the king of that kingdom came for hunting to that area and saw the girl while she was entering the cave, after drying her hair. The king thought where did this beautiful girl come from in this dense forest? As the girl slipped into the hole, the king could no longer see the girl. At that time, the jackal turned around and approached the hole. The king saw the jackal and asked about the girl. The jackal narrated all the old stories and said that I have brought up the girl. The king proposed to jackal to marry the girl. Happy with this news, the jackal called the girl from the hole and informed her that the king would marry her. The jackal told the King that as being an animal, I can only donate my daughter but cannot give you anything as charity, which a father should do. Hence to honor that, I will not touch the water in your kingdom. Even today, that custom continues in Odisha, a father should never accept anything at her married daughter's in-law's house, not even water. He only gives everything. After a few days, the jackal died and was born in the king of the Sun family in the next birth and became the king of the ocean. He remembered everything from his previous birth. He thought, I transformed to a king in the God's family from a jackal by bringing up a girl, so if I bring up 60000 girls, then I can get the post of Indra- the king of Gods in heaven. So the king of the ocean (jackal) worshiped Lord Brahma, "the Creator" of the Universe, to please him and get his desire fulfilled.

Indra - the king of Gods could knew the desire of the king of ocean and was fearful of loosing his position. So he requested Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of speech, to sit in front of the king's tongue and say boy instead of girl, so that his position could be saved. Saraswati did so, sat in front the king's tongue and the king asked for boy instead of girl. Lord Brahma granted the wish of the king of ocean, and over time his queen got pregnant and gave birth a big piece of flesh. Thinking that it was neither a boy nor a girl, the king threw it out in anger, and the flesh split open, and 60,000 boys came out like mustard seeds. They began to grow over time and devoured and emptied everything by eating them and finally even ate the soil. That is how, 3 parts of the world became ocean from soil. This created a bigger problem and Indra was worried thinking that these 60,000 boys will eat everything, thus ending the world. The boys had catch hold of a sacrificial horse. Indra stole the horse and left it in Kapila Muni's (saint Kapila) ashram (spiritual hermitage). The boys saw the horse at the ashram and thought the saint had stolen the horse and pulled off his beard. The angry Kapil Muni cursed them all to ashes, 60,000 sons were burnt to ashes and a pile of ashes was created. They asked the saint ( from the ashes, yes, they could do it) how will we be saved? The saint replied : if the Ganga (The Ganges) river flows over you then you will be liberated. Four generations passed away and then Bhagirath the great grand son of the fourth generation (Sagar King's son Asmanja, Asmanja's son Anshuman, Anshuman's son Dillip, Dillip's son Bhagirath ) tried to bring river Ganga by worshiping her for 12 years. She was at the nail's corner of Lord Vishnu, so Bhagirath worshiped Lord Vishnu for another 12 years but then he said, he has left Ganga with saint Merusula. Bhagirath worshiped Merusula again and he said Ganga has married Lord Shiva. Bhagirath worshiped Lord Shiva and he said, he has left Ganga at Lord Bamana's feet. When Bhagirath went to Bamana, he said, I could not keep Ganga and left her at the top of Mount Meru, the sacred five-peaked mountain. Bhagirath went to the Mount Meru and worshipped again, and Mount Meru asked him to bring the Airavata, the white divine elephant, with four tusks and seven trunks. Airavata is "king of elephants" and serves for the Lord Indra as his vehicle. If Airavata hits the Mount with his four tusks, then only can Ganga come out. Bhagirath served Airavata for 12 years after which it was a happy to go with him, but one one condition - If I take Ganga to earth, then I will marry Ganga. This is the reason, people give example of elephant as the biggest fool, like sky and hell relationship is impossible - it was trying to get hold of what it was incapable to handle. The Ganges agreed to Airavata's condition, but said, Airavata can be my husband if it can accept my stupidity. I will roll over Airavata in my flow till earth and he has to patiently suffer that. If it cannot, then it has to call me Mother, only then I will leave Airavata. Whatsoever, finally Airavata hit the Mount Meru with it's four tusks, one of its tusks broke, so it only 3 places broke and The Ganges came out with 3 edges only. The Ganges rolled the Airavata and carried it away, it got stuck at 5 places, resulting creation of five plateaus Indraprastha, Yamaprastha, Jayanta, Barunavanta, Hasteena. Finally, Ganga merged into the level plain. By that time Airavata had enough share of pain, so it called The Ganges as Mother asking for mercy.

The Ganges spared Airavata and gave a conch to Bhagirath and told him to blow and go in front and she will follow him. On the way, saint Kanva saw the Ganges coming at lightning speed, so for the protection of his Ashram and animals, he made the Ganga a drop of water with his power of mantra and drank it. Bhagirath realized this without seeing Ganga again, so he again stopped at saint Kanva's place and worshiped saint Kanva to leave Ganga, to liberate his ancestors. Saint Kanva finally agreed but fell into confusion, about how to release Ganga, if he releases it from the eyes, it will be tears, he cannot release it as urine, if he release from the ear, it will smell, if it is released from the mouth, it will be not be considered as purified. Same goes for nose, and anus, so he was forced to cut his thigh and let Ganga out by that way. That's why Ganga was named Janhabi. After coming out of his thigh, another lady God Sundhyaani captured the the Ganges and kept it in a pot. After serving Sundhyaani for twelve years, Bhagirath brought Ganga from the pot. Hence Ganga's other name is Surasuri. Finally the Ganges came and rescued those 60000 sinner brothers.

The Ganges are considered the holiest water in the Hindu culture and the water from the Ganges are used for purification and worship. It took immense amount of time to create the English version, and no translator was helpful. I tried Google translator, ChatGPT, but hey, this is where technology has limitation - it can never match our natural intelligence. So why did I put so much of effort ? It reminded me my childhood - at bedtime we used to hear this kind of stories from Mom that created the faith and belief in the divine power, the ultimate peace of life. And it teaches so many morals, which are very necessary in life. I have included some good Wiki references, as well. For sure we all will realize the power at some point of life. If you want to have a feelings of how people worship the Ganges, then visit Haridwar or Varanasi. We visited Haridwar in 2018 when we went to Kedarnath about which I wrote on this post and these photos are from that time. I will post more on that, but the point is that, the more we get engaged with these divine rituals, it makes our belief stronger and takes away all stress. Yesterday was Janmashtami, the birthday of the Lord Vishnu ! May Lord Krishna's flute invite the melody of love into your life and bless you and your family with Health, Wealth, and Happiness.

But to tell the truth, there are many more ferocious animals in our society than humans. Where people constantly dump their children in different dustbins or somewhere because of their illicit relationships. Anyway beautifully explained history.

True, people loose their heart, over purpose. But sinners will definitely get their share back. Earlier it was being told, if a father does a sin, then his son has to repay the debt. But now a days I often see, people pay the debt in this life alone.

Jackal decided to take the girl home and raise her as his own daughter.

when the animal is more civilized and humane than "humans" themselves 😂😂😂😂😂
It is a curious tale for the this river in its history as well as that of Indra.
It reminded me of the gods of Olympus

That was the era of Satya Yuga - purest ideal and humanity.

Wow! This is amazing! Your storyline was well brought up. I've heard a lot about this holy water.

But if that river is supposed to be so holy why do they let it get polluted?

But if that river is supposed to be so holy why do they let it get polluted?

Because we are living in the era of Kali Yuga, full of conflict and sin.

Indeed friend you have explained everything about river Ganga in a very detailed manner. As in our Indian Hindu culture Ganga River is given a very high place. Also the importance of river Ganges is very big in our culture. And you told very important information about it and really I didn't know much about it today because of you I understood it.

Thank you for sharing this interesting Hindu mythology story about the Ganges river. I can see why it took you a lot of effort to create the English version, as it is a complex and long story. I appreciate you taking the time to do so, and I learned a lot from it.

I agree with you that technology has its limitations, and that nothing can replace the human touch when it comes to storytelling. These kinds of stories are an important part of our culture and heritage, and they help us to connect with our ancestors and our faith.

I have never been to Haridwar or Varanasi, but I would love to visit one day. I have heard that the Ganges river is a very sacred place, and I would be honored to experience its power and beauty.
